OEA and WFP declining to endorse Kotek is significant. Perhaps this will persuade Kotek to reconsider her ill-conceived shift to the right and mollifying the billionaire class.

Not only are war protesters never publicly vindicated, but, more galling, the war mongers who have always been wrong - often catastrophically wrong - are never humbled or suffer any negative consequences. Instead, they are always trotted as the "experts" for the next war. With predictable results.

How about we stop creating employment situations that are ripe for litigation? That's a failure of management.

Oh, I am aware. And not just Superintendents. Hence, I have rather strong feelings about these payouts. They should not only be exceedingly rare, but also understood to be evidence of poor performance from all parties, employer as much as (maybe more than) employee. Make them a badge of shame.

Alternatively, if we won't stop gifting golden parachutes to departing bureaucrats, require that every payout is accompanied by a fulsome report to the City Council detailing the reasons for said departure and why it warrants compensation. These aren't union jobs. Make the $ costly.

So, so instructive to compare media response to Afghanistan withdrawal -- months of hysterical garment-rending & catastrophizing, relentless criticism of the admin -- with the response to an unprovoked, unmotivated, illegal war of aggression, ie, "some critics say maybe Trump should have reasons."

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.

We mustn’t let this war do so.
