What was I doing in Kembleford, you ask?
It’s a mystery… 😉

A year ago today dear Betty unwillingly left the place she’d spent her whole life - right by my side. I will always be heartbroken without her and always so grateful for every moment we spent together.

It’s not that deep. It’s not about politics. The Emmys voters would simply have never seriously considered Star Wars in an acting category. That’s all I think it is. However, Kyle Soller, Genevieve O’Reilly and Denise Gough 100% deserved nominations. In my opinion, Soller most of all.

Another #Andor standout for me was the truly brilliant performance by Josie Walker as the Force Healer. As a writer and ex-actor I so admire people who have one scene and deliver a fully realised, deep, real, complex human being that stays with you. Beautiful work.

An alert to all creatives using #WeTransfer. Basically, stop immediately! As of August, they will begin scraping everything you send for AI purposes (see the new paragraph in their Terms and Conditions below).
If, like me, you’re a voice artist, they’ll clone your voice. Avoid at all costs.
And one of the all time great ‘crap scraps’ in cinema history…

There’s one absolute certainty when the BBC says “we must accelerate our transformation and take advantage of opportunities in technology” - experienced, talented people will lose their jobs and they will not be replaced by humans. It’s zero sum bs. Invest in people, people!

and a fascinating new development in the TV landscape in the UK. The key question remains: how can local British stories that don’t sell globally still find funding to be made end up on these platforms too?
Particularly struck by Gilroy - who seldom if ever went to set - saying “I was sitting in this chair for 5 years…” That’s the writer’s life right there, folks. No shortcuts, no AI, no easy outs, just you, a chair, a screen and moving your fingers. That’s it. ✍️

Six years ago I wrote an article for the New Statesman tentatively asking what impact the rise of US streamers might have on British television, and the stories we, as a nation, tell about ourselves. Now, that drumbeat has grown into a full-blown existential crisis. Here are all the reasons why.

The ongoing contraction in UK TV production is entrenching this snobbery and slamming the door on so much brilliant and underused talent. It’s beyond time it was called out and ended. Talent is talent full stop. Use it or lose it.

The wealth of underused talent in the UK is an indictment on the ludicrous snobbery across our industry. It’s not just actors. Writers, directors, producers, crews, you name it, if you can make soap, you can make anything and brilliantly. Use the talent! End the soap prejudice. Clip @ 18:53
