Picture of Otis, an oat coloured Maltipoo dog wrapped in a similar coloured fluffy blanket on a brown leather sofa

Aww, Otis looked like a very good boy. Otis is also cuddled up now.

Picture of the constellation Otis (formerly called Leo) taken from my back garden, overlaid with a picture of a maltipoo dog, called Otis, on his back looking for belly rubs. The fit between the dog photo and the layout of the constellation stars is not exactly perfect...but, you know!

In these troubled times I think the IAU needs to reconsider the labelling of constellations, and their often fearsome nature might overspill into human affairs. So I propose that what was formerly Leo, should be called Otis (or canis ventrem fricans - dog needing tummy rubs)

Thanks. It was nearly 50 years ago. I missed 3-4 months of school that year. What reasonable person would want to go back to that time and put children in such danger again?

Agreed. I was born before there was measles vaccination in Ireland. Got measles aged 13, followed by pneumonia. I still remember the struggle, rasping, for breath, even though my case was not serious enough for me to be hospitalised.

I love the Morgan three wheeler. That model could even be pre WW-I. Looks like a Standard model, built from 1911-1915 and then again between 1920-1929. (The Deluxe model had a split front screen.)

Or maybe cis-trans isomers given their anti-science stance these days.

Agree completely. It is appalling but, sadly, not surprising. Shocked that in the 21st century, with so much evidence available, that they can make such a morally bankrupt determination. Is the Royal Society the Lehman Brothers of scientific organisations?

Whereas in St Albans last night there was near universal support for a motion supporting Trans people. www.hertsad.co.uk/news/2567387...

It is nice to see that it has gathered over 107,000 signatures! I would love to see the origin country of all social media posts published, with dolls coming over VPNs banned

Well, according to the lift in my office each person weighs 70kg. Therefore a ton is about 14 people and a small child. So, yes, her estimate sounds plausible to me.

Can we please stop using the term 'hallucinating' for when AI spews out garbage. Can we use Projectile Vomiting instrad. It makes a mess, and the immediate priority is to let everyone knows the mess is there so that they can avoid it. The next priority is to clean up the mess, which is a joy.

I don't think so, not even then. My dad worked for a newspaper on the printing side and we used to have reams of newsprint at home for drawing and writing on in the 70s and 80s. None of it was fountain pen friendly. Apart from the pink FT newsprint was pretty generic from what I remember.

To me, newsprint is not very compatible with fountain pens if you are filling in a crossword.

I remember that we used to have the Fontana Dictionary of Modern thought back at home in the 70s. It was invaluable for defining these terms - do you think I need to send the BBC a copy?

Prue Bray: I am so angry I almost can’t type We are in the middle of elections for internal roles in the Federal party, and I am one of the candidates for President. Voting opens tomorrow. So, this morning, I sat down to write a piece about why ...

Impressed by @pruebray.bsky.social’s response to the @libdems.org.uk bizarre transphobia.

Less so by their undemocratic approach to enforcing discrimination:

Thanks for the note. Did a chunk of these for Dublin today in 1940/41. Interesting to see what the weather was like when my mother was 9. Such a great August!

Last Night of the Proms 2025 - Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor join BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, BBC Singers and National Youth Choir for new orchestral arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody The special performance marks the 50th anniversary of the Queen song

I am looking forward to this. Firstly because it is probably going to be amazing, and secondly as one of my daughters is part of the NYC choir for this! Also where did that 50 years go?

Not sure where you live but I have several Shaffers from 60s-90s and cartridges are available online for them. Although if you plan to use it a lot the converter is about £6-8 in the UK and so using bottled ink would be more economical in the longer term. Sheaffers are mostly wonderfully smooth.

There is a fountain pen feed that picks up any post with "fountain pen" in the body of the message or in the alt description in a picture.

So, there needs to be a new law: "Only allow into positions of power people whose favourite biscuits are Ginger Nuts, Ginger Snaps or Ginger Cookies"

I second the Sheaffer Imperials. Also the targas, which can be later also can be great and are plentiful. For older Parkers, consider the Parker 45 which is cheap, plentiful and very robust. (And everything comes apart if you have to clean it). One of these is my work pen and travels everywhere.

With really old pens with celluloid bodies you cannot use this approach. The celluloid can deform and anything held with shellac can detach. Also not good for a Parker 61. The little gold arrow at the nib can detach.

...with clean water. The ink feels can get clogged with dry ink. I then re-soaked the section. I did a finance rinse with distilled water (as I have some anyway). There are people who have ultrasonic cleaners, but I just take a patient approach.
