Animal learning is painfully slow (at least initially). Yet, well trained animals can learn very fast, sometimes displaying few-shot inference. How does this transition occur?

Duration between rewards controls the rate of behavioral and dopaminergic learning - Nature Neuroscience Cue–reward learning rate scales proportionally with the time between rewards. Very excited to post our paper led by @daburke.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41... where we uncover a simple mathematical rule underlying how brains learn that a cue predicts a reward. 1/26

Daniel Huber, Université de Genève, will present a talk on "Cortical circuits involved in voluntary action".

Abstract:
"We will present how he uses closed-loop optical brain–machine interfaces combined with single-cell optogenetic manipulations to interrogate the cortical circuits underlying goal-directed action. Using two-photon population recordings, we find that cortical activity preferentially encodes behavioral goals rather than detailed kinematic parameters, and that this representation is strongly driven by thalamic input. Together, these findings suggest that cortical activity primarily serves to guide action direction and intent, rather than to issue direct motor commands."

New paper alert! 🚨

We found that the brain's compass is remarkably stable at two scales

1️⃣ the system maintains its internal organization for weeks
2️⃣ It "remembers" its orientation for weeks, even after a single visit

This may be key to how the brain aligns its other maps.

Meanwhile, the contralateral visual cortex provides head movement signals during ipsiversive movements - creating a complementary system.
Crucially, the pulvinar already encodes these same variables, suggesting subcortical computation.

The ipsilateral pulvinar delivers the main head movement signal, with a bias toward contraversive movements (e.g., clockwise rotations are encoded more strongly in left V1).
