It kind of makes sense that extended collections are an enterprise-only feature, since it’s so niche. My interpretation would help solve some of the library-inheritance issues caused by variables, and I hope it will eventually be available to all users.

I finally got a chance to explore @figma.com's extended collections. I think a better term would have been subcollections.

In my mind, extended collections meant that we could extend the collection of any library with new variables that use the same base modes.

Kinda? Federated can be hard to sustain since most apps tend to put up walls as they grow. I do expect to make it work with my other productivity app, but sure beyond that.

I used Cursor to set up an MCP server to let Claud Desktop talk to Obsidian and Things. I set up a few projects in Claude, each with project-specific rules. We use Obsidian as a Memory System for rules and Things for todo-list widgets. Eventually, I’ll just make all of this a single app.

Buried under the lede is a game changer for complex Figma component libraries that rely on variable modes.

@figma What happened to theSee All Branches menu? Somebody randomly shrank it down, so now we can only see five branches at a time and hover-scrolls so fast that we can't read anything. Who does that help?

The hardest working font in Manhattan: Marcin Wichary's beautifully visual and interactive history of a 135-year-old typeface that's somehow everywhere and largely unknown at once https://aresluna.org/the-harde...

Probably the #1 request since auto-layout was introduced ✅

It works out of the gate for variable-width + fill layouts. For everything else, you can use nested frames to apply behaviors (variable-height, alignment, etc).

Dunno. I find design systems can be a clever way to sneak in quality in smaller portions when you’re not allowed to do it all at once.

Capitalism does not have to be separated from compassion.

If you do it right, it increases personal responsibility.

You profit significantly, while also providing value in society, helping the poor & sick, creating opportunity, and giving back.

We often stray from the ideal.

This was announced on X, but not on 🦋...

Variable colors in @figma.com now have hover tool tips in the properties panel showing the description and value.

It shows when you hover over the text, but not the swatch. It also doesn't work in pop-up windows, just the right rail. Good start though 👍

Unfortunately, that can only be done one field at a time — we can't use multi-edit.

I swear that we used to be able to start with a variable and disconnect it in the properties panel. This changed a few months ago...

It's better to start with regular text and add variable-based text as needed. If the component starts with variable-based text, we can never choose to use regular text. Figma currently doesn't allow it.

A challenge of being a design systems person is that we have little to say that's exciting...

Designer: here's this awesome animation of a shimmery, rainbow colored cloud

DS: I'm testing grouping my variable groups in a collection-named group, because collection names don't show up in search

Unless you have a guaranteed roadmap to do each phase, don't bother. Sometimes alpha is all you need. Other times final turns into "final final 2 this one! (October 2024)".

Just make sure your latest version works and is bug free. Iterate for what is needed, not for semantics.
