My get rich quick scheme is to move to Asia and sell "Ancient European Secret" quackery, and it will be all leaches and no bathing.

Getting ready for AWP. If you're on a panel, please do not spend your time saying you don't know anything about the topic. No one came to hear that. We all know human's are fallible, just take your best shot.

What consequences? Oh, you mean for other people.

When will media stop writing these stories? Oh no, Trump's doing something inconsistent with his beliefs and his followers don't like it! Oh no, he found a new minority for them to brutalize so they love him again! We've been doing this for 10 years, people, try learning literally anything.

Writing retreats always ask why you want to go there. My honest answers are "Because I crave institutional validation, and because I want to crawl back into my MFA the way some children want to go back into the womb."

Please rate this response in terms of its likelihood to land me a residency.

This, by the way, is why you see posts from AI artists complaining about not being able to come up with ideas; because making art is what gives you ideas to make more art, and they've cut out that step.

I disagree that AI "artists" are naturally stupid or uncreative. What AI artists are missing is that creativity takes practice, and producing interesting art isn't a matter of rote skill, but of learning how to think. That can't be skipped, not for moral reasons, but for practical ones.

I gotta say, I don't think it's appropriate to pitch me in the comments of my personal account. Not only will I not use your service, but I would tell anyone who asked to avoid you (not sure why anyone would ask.) Like, you don't even follow me what is this.

I'm writing a plot synopsis for beta readers, but it's also kind of a test-run for agents. Would you include prologue/epilogues? Would you include a backstory chapter? How would you designate these? For instance, I'm considering writing: In a backstory chapter, we see...

Kids today don't even know about Tad Williams' Otherland. We were doing this in 1996.

The book I'm reading that brought this up is straightforward fantasy, I just think the author is more familiar with video games, and so just narrates every little thing the protagonist does.

Not really, is it like choose your own adventure?

@thelincoln.bsky.social , in addition to "Tv-brain" writing, I think we should consider "video-game-brain" writing, where the prose is like watching someone steer an avatar around the screen. The current novel I'm reading does this and it's driving me crazy.

It was pretty asinine the first time, but there's not even anything new to talk about. Just another "kids these days" tweet that isn't inspired by a specific event, followed by "remember that time three years ago someone said something stupid about ableism and writing?"

The "should writers read?" discourse feels artificial this time around, like an excuse to get out that Ana Mardoll tweet from a couple years ago out an smack it around again, like we found an old pinata in the attic.

I don't know how to argue with these people. AI are not humans. Humans are humans. That makes them inherently more valuable. It isn't a waste of resources to use them on humans. Humans are what resources are for.
