Our short film's swooping into this year’s Māoriland! My brother and I are gonna road trip it down to Ōtaki for this Indigenous film rave. The Charm of the Magpies is playing in the late Friday night section Ti Whatiwha te Pō, which is such a great placement.

“Coerced and forced sterilization is considered a crime against humanity under international law and also constituting genocide... over 70,000 Native American women and women of color were forcibly sterilized just in the ’70s alone, when these eugenics laws were on the books.”

Attempts to cancel authors. Attempts to cancel books. Attempts to cancel writers festivals. Attempts to cancel arts grants.

Have these whingers tried more fibre in their diets? Could improve their outlook on life

Apparently someone/group is trying to get my next book cancelled. And someone else has written a pearl-clutching article about this demand to cancel my book.
This novel was written to honour members of the Stolen Generations (ie Aboriginal children who were forcibly removed under racist policies) 🤷🏽‍♀️

Black and white text and images on a white background. Image is two people, large pencils and a wave of water on the right side. The man is raising his fist in a style typical of revolutionaries, and in his other hand he’s carrying a book with the Aboriginal flag on the cover. A woman is next to him, raising her hand and holding a pencil.
Text above them: rivers of reason. Blak and Arab writers in conversation.
Text underneath: Tarntanya 2nd March 2026. Adelaide town hall, 128 king William street. 2.30 to 7.30 pm.
At the bottom are designs that represent the Aboriginal flag and a keffiyeh.

What does ‘time immemorial’ really mean? - High Country News If you’ve seen the phrase time immemorial used repeatedly in Indigenous affairs reporting, there are some compelling reasons why.

My latest essay for HCN critically interrogates the phrase "time immemorial," which Indigenous affairs reporters like me sometimes overuse.

Map of colonial frontier massacres in Australia 1788-1930 This map shows documented massacres of the First Nations peoples across Australia, from the early years of the colony to within several decades of living memory.

Adelaide Festival Board & Premier Peter Malinauskas made a race-based consience choice by erasuring the 10,000+ First Nations people who were massacred by British soliders, Aust police & settlers during 1788 to 1930. Some single massacres resulted in 100s of deaths.

My reply to the Adelaide Festival Board's email. I'll add the text in a thread.

In no way do I believe this ill-conceived decision has come from the Adelaide Writers Week team.

I will be withdrawing from two panels I was to chair at Adelaide Writers Week 2026. I stand in solidarity with Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah, and other Palestinian Australian writers. I urge all writers to do the same. Watch out for statements from SA mob. www.adelaidefestival.com.au/news/2025/ad...
