Fic readers like to read about characters they're already familiar with. There's that fear of the unknown, that can make it harder to get into new stories with unfamiliar characters. But you gotta do it to engage with new ideas. Gotta push through the discomfort to see something new.

I personally end up writing my own fic more often than reading others' fic. And when I do read fic, I'm fairly picky, and will follow specific writers whose fics I like because I like their specific writing styles.

Something something if I wanna see something, I'm gonna write it myself

Some published writers may start out via writing fanfic because they were so inspired. Some writers start out in original fiction then do fanfic for fun on the side. Some people purely write fanfic for the fun of it without interest in publishing. Fanfic is fun! Fanfic comes from a place of passion!

Two things can be true at once:

One - Consuming primarily fanworks and aversion to engaging with new ideas pre-disposes you to reiterate common tropes and amateur writing flaws in your own work

Two - fanworks and the spaces that host them are important ways to foster community and inspire people

What did I do to deserve this

Every comic I’ve ever drawn has taken a chunk of my health with it. Every cartoonist should be a millionaire for the amount of effort you have to put in.

It's worth keeping in mind that Kansas has a strict voter ID law, so this law has essentially instituted a poll tax on all trans people in the state because they have to pay to get their ID replaced.
