I share your worries. Unfortunately Tolkien’s works are now in the hands of people with too much money who don’t give a damn about the material, just turning a buck.
I love how United Airlines asks you if you want to check a bag - which you have to pay for - BEFORE informing you that the flight is full and you can check your bag for free. Tricky, tricky.
I feel like I have some good candidates for guesses...
I heard absolutely nothing whatsoever remotely close to him saying they wouldn't be there anyway.
Age verification? I remember the milkman delivering milk and butter to the door (to be fair, it was my grandparents' door...)
I had TikTok for a couple of months until I realized that it was devouring my hours the same way that MTV did when it first started.
"TikTok’s Terms of Service now explicitly include tracking of location and citizenship status (among other identity markers, such as sex)." newrepublic.com/article/2059...
I love the movies for what they are, but their treatment of Eowyn's tragic story is almost unforgivable. Her confrontation with the Witch-king in the Rankin-Bass animated version of RotK is a million times better than what Jackson barfed onto the screen.
For the SUPER Lord of the Rings nerds:
I came across this interesting deep-dive about the Siege of Gondor from the LotR movies, with comparisons and contrasts to the book, written by a military historian.

Love that song and the album.
Just got word that ICE is raiding clubs and bars in downtown Austin.
Most folks don’t realize that Elvis Costello’s “What’s So Funny (’Bout Peace Love and Understanding)” is a cover.
"Comply or die" - how very American.
(And before anyone jumps on me, I am very aware that this has been the reality of life in this country for a large number of people all along)
To ICE that's a feature not a bug. They WANT journalists to be afraid to cover them.
I had to be mindful of that phenomenon the first time I watched Citizen Kane
I have not! And to be clear, I love New Zealand - my wife and I spent two amazing weeks there a couple years ago, and I would go back in a heartbeat!
I love the LOTR movies but the Hobbit movies can disappear forever and I wouldn't shed a tear. So... 50-50. But... Dead Alive and Whale Rider tip the scales back to positive.
If you appreciate Kirsty MacColl, I can’t recommend “Tropical Brainstorm” highly enough - and in fact even if you don’t. But either way I really encourage folks to read this review of the album - I can’t read it without getting a little misty eyed. www.alibris.com/search/music...?
Well this never happens!
They fetishize war. This is anathema to them: "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
I first fell in love with the X-Men during the John Byrne era, and that version of the Cyclops outfit was always my favorite.
Been working on this thing on and off for over a year - finally finished.
I'd love to see a Klingon-focused show - like, the Federation only appears occasionally and are incidental to the main storylines.
A few years ago I was walking around Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire with some family members and passed a fellow with an interesting haircut walking the other way, talking on his phone about old photographs. Realized quickly that it was Ken Burns.
I just bought my wife a copy of this on vinyl for Christmas - one of her all time favorite albums.
I just took a position as an adjunct professor at a small university and was surprised when they actually did require my transcripts!
It’s surprised nobody has taken a shot at a Ladyhawke remake.
I would love to see a dramatic reenactment of the moment she learned the ep was released anyway - I’m envisioning something like the moment in Wrath of Khan where the Enterprise remotely disables Reliant’s shields.
I dunno; I had a senior development director at a recent game job tell me that despite the company's official position of "we're exploring the possible uses of AI to see where we can use it ethically", the studio would be using it regardless - otherwise they would "fall behind competitively".
