βThere is no workaround to this moment β we are all targetsβ
The attacks on DEI and academic freedom show higher education needs to come together, build collaborations and stand firm. Hereβs how
My latest in Times Higher Education, which outlines some concrete strategies, including how to be clear-eyed in this moment that higher education, academic freedom; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and institutional autonomy are under attack. www.timeshighereducation.com/campus/there...

When Injustice Anywhere Becomes Policy Everywhere
The constitutional rights fundamental to a democratic society are under assault. This assault began by targeting Black, brown, and LGBTQ Americans while others stood by.

College presidents must denounce white nationalist attacks (opinion)
The movement must not be written off as just politics or culture wars when in fact itβs a direct threat to everything higher education stands for, writes Michael Gavin.

This ouster is in retaliaton for working to make an institution align with its values of equality by attending to racial oppression. The political intervention shows whiteness shall not be challenged without consequence, & a clear overreach and violation of institutional autonomy.

Floridaβs GOP Presidential Hiring Spree
Last week the Florida Board of Governors approved three new presidential hires with ties to Governor Ron DeSantis and the GOP, a trend that is clearly growing across the state.
The intervention of politics into higher education, and other spheres, is an attempt to shape the countryβs future by defining who is a citizen and who is not, in a cultural sense by creating legal definitions of βAmericanβ contrary to democracy and equality.

Although most colleges are not the target they are targeted by policy and budget proposals which equate to limitations of access and support for those who need it the most. Was happy to be quoted in this article about leading a culture in higher Ed at this moment.
