This should set giant alarm bells off for so many reasons. It is not hyperbolic or an overreaction to say the direction we're heading in is very bad (where we are and have been is already very bad), and we've seen a variation on this playbook before and it always escalates.

It's not at all sensationalized and is almost entirely footage from police body cams, police station cameras, etc. What is horrific is that over & over again, it takes Black and brown people's trauma being replayed on viral loop for them to be protected, for even the possibility of accountability.

I should clarify that I'm not criticizing the filmmakers for showing this grief and trauma to the world. I can see why the director, Geeta Gandbhir, put this documentary together, and it's so obvious that the team did it with thoughtfulness and intention.

It only didn't work this time because Ajike & the community that had her back is on video so many times telling the truth & speaking up bravely against a white woman who played victim while tormenting a neighborhood of kids who loved to play together. How many times has there just not been video?

This is not new information and Black women especially have been saying this for forever, but this is clear as day, right on Netflix, a white woman who tried to weaponize her tears and claims of fear against a Black woman and her babies.

If there wasn't a trail of documented, accessible evidence of her harassing her neighbors, if she hadn't called 911 twice in such quick succession (but somehow "couldn't find" her phone in the 2 minutes between calls while she found her gun & murdered Ajike), a jury would've bought her fear as fear.

Watched The Perfect Neighbor yesterday and while I struggle with people's (esp children's) grief & trauma being broadcast, I'm also struck by the fact that if the murderer hadn't been such a miserable neighbor & called the police so many times on kids being kids, I doubt she would've been convicted.

this is something that individual members of Congress could do tomorrow. The government is shut down so they could use their district offices. I suggested in January that they turn those offices into full on community centers where people could find each other re: mutual aid etc...
