I don't have a good answer for what the alternative looks like, but asking 18 years to bet their future on highly specified training for jobs based on which they think will be in high demand 5-10 years from now turned out to be a very bad way to structure higher education

In more higher level of gov't meddling in local affairs news....Ontario, NS, AB, DC, LA.....a continuum of this.

strava foot sports heatmap

if you squint you can sort of see a similar phenomenon in Toronto with the 1967-1998 pre-amalgamation boundaries, which I'm not brushed up on my Toronto history but might assume were the parts of Toronto heavily planned and developed before the 1950s?

and yes, Strava can be biased toward more wealthy audiences who have leisure time to run: which makes point grey even more interesting given its demographics.

City of Vancouver starva heat map for walking/running/on foot sports. Boundaries added on top for historical municipalities: City of Vancouver 1911 boundaries in green, south Vancouver in red (annexed 1929) Point Grey to the west using the colours of its neighbours (annexed in 1922), Hastings townsite in blue, annexed 1911. The heatmap shows more blue predominantly in the grid of the old city. Map Via Strava, lines crudely drawn by me.

Not an original thought, but was looking at the Strava walk/run heat map and its always funny when you still see the 1911 City of Vancouver boundaries somewhat. Really shows that the parts of the city developed in the '20s-50s dropped off in density and walkability. Map via Strava, crude lines by me

to what extent does the administration intend to use this money to fund things that congress won't, and also, treating states like conquered territories to be dominated is one of those things that really makes you think the goal of these people is to dissolve the union

further reflection, for their specific scenario: kingsway between Nanaimo and King Edward has 2 major bus routes, including the regions 5th busiest. this parking spot should be a red painted bus lane the entire way anyway. There's ample parking around in the lot 1 block up and side streets.

Buses need automated enforcement cameras: this 19 Kingsway bus honked at this guy, just sitting in his car idling, and he not only refuses to move, he started to back up and then stopped. he ended up delaying a bunch of ppl instead of parking a few metres away, because it couldn't get out quickly

A thing not often mentioned here is one of the things OpenAI is trying to take away is community. Having experts beyond yourself β€” and professionals and friends and family and and and β€” means interacting with them, enforcing community. This attempts (poorly, thankfully) to diminish and destroy that.

β€˜Most ridiculous decision’: Doug Ford slams Ontario judge over bike lane decision The Ontario government said it will appeal a decision by Superior Court Justice Paul Schabas, who ruled that Ford’s plans to remove bike lanes on Bloor, University and Yonge streets was unconstitution...

Both the Star and CP just wrote up Ford's comments, and left out the fact that he obviously didn't read the ruling and just decided to petulantly lie about it. Neither story pointed out the judge said that Ford's government didn't try to make their case, and blatantly lied in what they did say.

Why you might not know that 2024 was America's safest year since the 1960s An overwhelming majority of Americans, 64 percent, believe that crime increased across the country in 2024, according to a Gallup survey conducted late last year.

1. This week, the FBI released its comprehensive crime report for 2024, which revealed that both VIOLENT CRIME and PROPERTY CRIME reached their LOWEST LEVELS SINCE THE 1960s

This a massive story. But you might not have heard about it, even if you follow the news closely.

Here's why.

The trans panic is maddening, because trans people are expected to defend ourselves with logic science and any sign of emotion is a failure.

And yet the anti-trans campaign is nothing but appeals to emotion unburdened by facts, precedent, or empathy.

β€œThe fact of the matter is that most of this AI generated stuff is just not as good. It's lazy, it doesn't align well with our standards, and it's very, very obvious to the kids.”

The pressure to use this tech in the classroom is another way AI is inherently coercive technology. It destroys choice.

My partner was knocked off his bike today, rear-ended at red lights he'd stopped at.

If he'd jumped the red, he wouldn't have been hit.

It's frustrating that cyclists get f*cked whether they play by motorists' rules or not. Car drivers are totally deluded by their own self importance.

A journalist with Canada’s public broadcaster was not allowed on the Canadian plane air dropping aid into Gaza because of Israeli restrictions.

When she made it onto a Jordanian plane, she was not allowed to film what she saw on the ground in Gaza because Israel forbids it from being shown.

ANALYSIS | Alberta minister threatens to axe bike lanes. Can he make his case? | CBC News Province claims urban bike lanes worsen congestion. Ontario said the same thing β€” then a judge found they lacked evidence to back up their point.

"Whether it's dubbed ending the 'war on cars' or fighting for 'common sense,' the fight over which road users get asphalt space has sounded similar across the country."

haha it is Comox st., and yeah probably the case, feel like if anything it adds to the urban whimsy of the west end and the entire street is presumably completely blocked off most of these times anyway, so more of a formality.

POPs (privately owned, publicly accessible spaces), much like inclusionary zoning, are a well-intentioned idea in theory that consistently don't deliver, because some things are public goods to the point they can only be delivered at scale by governments.

Horrible decision. Will result in less ridership, lower revenues, more driving and worse vehicle congestion (with all the corresponding costs and consequences). Either they don’t understand that, or they’re ok with all that.

Instead, we’re getting a vulgar new gold ballroom, which none of us will ever see.
