Sadly I took the exam in France (on the plus side it's free over there).

I'll share this with some knowledgeable people :)

Both ways of making SW are OK, but making the distinction clear and respecting author's wishes would be great.

Open source is already limited to what it says: the source itself is open. Collaboration is not, even though usually people appreciate patches sent their way.

Isle 🏝️ is my new #FPGA project.

Isle is a simple, modern computer β€” an open design that encourages tinkering, experimentation, and doing your own thing. I hope to inspire you to come on a journey with me and build your own computer. projectf.io/isle/fpga-co...

btw, don't listen to those who say the UI is bad, if anything it's a breath of fresh air from the large swath of minimalist copycats out there. IMO It has densely-packed information presented in a readable way.

I will probably write a custom theme for it tho.

I still need to test it locally and see how to make it behave more like Nextcloud when it comes to accounts (e.g., can each user have its own root? Can I have shared folders that appear in each user's root?)

YouTube video by tripflag introducing copyparty, the FOSS file server

Ok so somebody shared this with me www.youtube.com/watch?v=15_-...

And it could very well be the best piece of SW I've seen in years. It provides solutions to many problems I had, it has such a bold hacker personality, it is so lean... it is perfect, thanks @tripflag.bsky.social

idk, take sides on whatever flame war is trending right now. Language wars are always a safe bet, editor wars are old-fashioned though. Maybe some vibe coding thing?

Drama always racks up engagement!

You're welcome. If you finally decide to use the tools I use (I don't have experience with F4PGA, although AFAIK they also use yosys and nextpnr) and need a template to get started, feel free to ask, it may be helpful as a reference to get you started without worrying about plumbing tools together.

The tools I've used so far are:

- Your favorite editor to write code
- make as a build system
- yosys for synthesis
- nextpnr for PnR (and bitstream generation)
- openFPGALoader to flash it to the FPGA
- verilator/Icarus Verilog for simulation
- gtkwave/Surfer for viewing waveforms

If you want something more powerful/expensive... no idea. Xilinx FPGAs (in particular the XC7 family) are somewhat supported, but it's not at the same level as the ECP5 in terms of FOSS support. I got the toolchain working for it recently, but it's not something they officially support yet.

Machdyne – Timeless computing.

For a devboard, it depends on your budget and your needs.

I'd suggest an ECP5-based board (great FOSS support and reasonable performance), either an iCESugar-pro if you want a cheap board with lots of I/O pins, or a board from machdyne.com if you want something more polished.

IMO it's the right thing to do. You can go the extra mile and support it in HW (with various degrees of complexity and performance), you can forbid it in HW but implement it as an illegal instruction trap handler, or you can define it as UB.

How do network connections survive the process? Does it require cooperation from the other end? How do file descriptors survive migrating from one machine to another? Is it portable across kernel versions?

I've always found CRIU's proposition impressive but I've never stopped to learn about it...

May I ask how "expanded" are we talking about? I hope it's related to your previous posts, because those scenes really made me excited about any future release of yours :)
