Had an unexpected stab of sorrow today. Realised it was the anniversary of VJ day. 80 yrs to the day since my mum was concieved as my grandparents celebrated the end of the war. Born mid May the following year. She would have been 79 now, but passed away 10 years ago. Miss her still.

An example of the map explorer within the UK Geothermal Platform, with layer controls. The graphic shows an illustration of a computer screen, with a map of the UK on it, and to the left are the layer controls. Above it says in blue text 'UK geothermal platform'. The BGS logo is to the top right.
An overview of geothermal energy potential for four geothermal technologies in Great Britain: Closed loop GSHP, open loop GSHP, hot sedimentary aquifer and deep geothermal, EGS granites.

BGS has launched the UK Geothermal Platform, which provides national- to local-scale information on geothermal potential.
Geothermal technologies have the potential to decarbonise heating and cooling, supporting the energy transition to net zero in the UK.

Because each event is independent, every time Nat does the toss the chance of her winning it is still 1 in 2. But if you look back and say what was the chance of her calling correct in 8 cases, then you need to multiply the 1/2 up 8 times to get 1 in 256. But its still 50/50 tonight!

Quote from the restaurant at the end of the universe.
"The major problemβoneΒ of the major problems, for there are severalβone of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who mustΒ wantΒ to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. "

This. We will not have an energy transition without addressing infrastructure: transport (railways, metros, trams) for modal shift from cars, district heating network construction, wind turbines, grid transition & distribution investments for increased renewable electricity, energy storage etc.

Technology can be incredibly useful. It can also lead to down-skilling. I worry about AI in this respect too. Sometimes there is no substitute for thinking about things for oneself.

You can't out right the right. You need to actually invest in services and yes infrastructure that will make people's lives better. This includes the energy transition that will create jobs, and transport so people can get to them.
