Well now, I did not see this coming, but this is awesome! Great comic, and hope for the absolute best with the Kickstarter when it launches!

Near as I can tell hardware seems fine, RAM passed Memtest's tests and SMART reports a drive health of 100%, may keep an eye on CPU temps and voltages next time I'm gaming and see if anything seems out of the ordinary, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be some incredibly unlucky fluke.

Oh I don't blame the game, it's pure coincidence whatever happened occurred while I was playing and the unusually long load screen was the first sign of things gone bad.

I'll let things run as they are for now but will be keeping watch for any signs of trouble, and keeping my backups updated.

I'm rather glad it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, at least on the surface. I'll definitely be keeping a closer eye on things though in case other symptoms arise that might indicate such down the road.

So, during all the faffing about I had to pull power from the system a couple times, which resulted in the BIOS clearing its settings itself. System defaults didn't end up making a difference.

Also did end up running Memtest somewhat unintentionally (grabbed the wrong USB), let it run and it passed

Currently the system seems to be running fine, almost as if the issue never happened. Fingers crossed whatever happened doesn't happen again, but at least everything's backed up now in case anything does. As long as I stay on top of it, if I do end up needing to reinstall, I'll be better prepared.

I figured I would try exhausting other avenues before I resorted to wiping and reinstalling, mostly I was concerned about salvaging what data I could in the event I had to resort to that. Getting the OS back into a usable state was somewhat unexpected but welcome.

Any rate, I'm going to have to keep a close eye on the PC going forward, in case this fix ends up short-lived.

Also going to try to be more strict about doing my backups more regularly, in the event of this or any other issues that might result in data being lost or inaccessible. 13/13

What even happened while I was playing my game that ultimately seems to have led to a corrupted registry, rendering Windows inoperable until I transplanted a copy from another PC? 12/13

SFC runs and manages to fix some of the issues it found, DISM refused to accept anything I tried to use as a valid source image so I eventually gave up on that. Tried again to boot the PC, failed and rebooted into the recovery mode. Attempt a startup repair, it takes a moment but it completes. 11/X

Cross my fingers and reboot the PC, doesn't boot but something changed, rather than the "critical_process_died" stopcode I'd been getting with (some) prior attempts I instead got an "inaccessible_boot_device" stopcode, so I reboot into the install media and reattempt the SFC and DISM fixes. 10/X

Apparently Windows is *supposed* to be doing some sort of hidden registry backup that one could use to potentially restore a corrupted registry but apparently my PC hasn't been, so I try a bit of a long shot and grab the registry files from another PC and drop them on the affected one. 9/X

Get home from work today, more attempts to sort out the issue, SFC and DISM aren't able to fix anything, but I check the DISM log and the error it throws up when I try, turn up a search result saying it ended up being a corrupted registry. Okay, I might have something there, so I look up a fix. 8/X

Go into advanced options and attempt a startup repair, unsuccessful. Welp.

Fast forward a bit, boot up Windows install media, check disk for errors (none found, phew), check disk attributes to ensure it didn't somehow end up in read-only mode (it didn't), no idea what's going on. 7/X

So, I go to do that... Got as far as confirming the changes the app was going to make before the PC hung up again. Reboot the system... System fails to boot, automatically restarts and launches into the recovery mode. Restart system from there, fails to boot, end up back in recovery mode. 6/X

I reboot the system, this time it struggles a little but eventually boots, and I figure something's wrong and I should probably do a quick backup of my application data folder, recalling another user on that post saying they had to completely reinstall Windows to resolve the issue. 5/X

PC booted, so I fired up Steam and FF7 Rebirth, got into the game, auto-save had me at the Grasslands port so I tried to fast-travel to Junon again. Game didn't end up dying trying to load and I arrive in Junon, but shortly after, game dies, then my PC hangs up completely. 4/X

Try closing and relaunching Steam, then the game. Same result. Okay, so I search up the map load error, find a result that amounts to the user having to restart their PC to sort the issue, so I try that. This is when things started to go quite unfortunately wrong. 3/X

After a while waiting for something to happen, the game just closes itself, so after waiting for Steam to sync the cloud save I attempt to relaunch the game. No dice, get a bunch of UE5 errors, followed by a "cannot load map" error. Try again, same result. 2/X

So I'm playing FF7 Rebirth, having a grand old time, running around completing the quests that open up in Chapter 12. I go to fast-travel from the Grasslands to Junon, load screen ends up sticking around for a rather unusually long time... 1/X
