Just saw this - I don’t think I have seen anything about US investment for those years - almost everything I have read is on British company/family dominance through to the 1890s - Brereton (A History) is my source - pp 84-86.

One more try here - does anyone know if USD was circulating widely in the Caribbean in the 1870s? Dominica had only irregular steamship commerce (mostly resale from Barbados and Martinique). But maybe it was a dominant currency, as most imported food was of US origin? Guesses welcome! πŸ—ƒοΈ #skystorians

Having got to a place where there are few to no career-length jobs in the humanities, in a society where much of the work itself β€” particularly on β€œdivisive” subjects β€” is reviled in media and attacked by politicians, we have created conditions that select for wealthy folk, cliff divers and saints

Yes it’s Valentine’s Day. But it’s also the chosen birthday of Frederick Douglass who was born in 1818 on a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland. He escaped from slavery & rose to become the most eloquent and forceful voice for the abolition of slavery & for Black voting rights in the U.S.
