... to make it affordable. In this instance, we're not talking about them somehow continuing dial-up service but about bringing those regions up to modern technology, with satellite or broadband tech, & the physical technology to access it.

But, like I said, if we're talking about a VITAL service that some citizens for specific reasons are unable to access, & that puts them regionally at a significant disadvantage, this is where federal or state governments should step in to even the odds, & provide or underwrite the service...

If people are cutting out the service WITHOUT some superior technology taking its place, like just b/c they can no longer fit what they used to be able to pay into their budget (as opposed to the service raising prices beyond affordability), THAT'S a "recession indicator"...

Not sure it's a recession indicator that old technologies are being replaced by new ones. As you mention, at a certain point, short of monopolistic repression of the new to manipulate profits, too few people will be willing to pay for an item or a service to justify continuation.

Obviously not enough of them are using AOL for the company (which most people likely don't ever realize still exists) to maintain dial-up service... but dial-up probably can't handle 99+% of the modern web anyway.
