One day I'll write about it fully. Until then - anyone pretending that the fight for LGBT+ rights was respectful and civil (and we were always LGBT+, even when some cis gays and lesbians were doing their best to exclude the rest of us - the rest of us were still fighting) - well, fuck that lie.

Sometimes something will jog a memory of those years, and I'll realise just what an enormous well of anger there still in - that grew up alongside me during Section 28, unequal age of consent, no rights for queer partners - the narrative that we were automatically abusers, degenerates, defective.

...when we did tell straight/cis people, most of them didn't want to believe it. Mostly we didn't talk to them about it. We knew not to trust them. When they already treated us as walking jokes/threats/perverts, why would you tell them about the broken ribs, the groping, being stalked at night?

I do know some straight cis people who didn't go along with it - my brother never did - but I don't know that many. And that was just the surface level stuff that the straight cis people could see. Thinking about my friends at that time who were assaulted, physically and sexually, for being queer...

Going into the workplace mid/late 2000s, an awful lot of 'banter' - faggot, poof, tranny, rug muncher, etc. etc. - absolute refusal of the people doing it to stop because everyone else should just toughen up, it's just a joke. No support from straight/cis colleagues. Just completely normal.

First day of undergraduate in 2002, having coffee with my cohort - being asked if me being bisexual meant I wanted to fuck animals, and being expected to give a serious, respectful answer.

Iunno, it's just so weird for me, as somebody who was an out queer in the first couple of decades of this century to see this rewriting of history where the "debate" about gay rights then was this genteel, public spirited conversation. They blamed the gays for hurricanes and earthquakes.

This kind of...narrative excess?...feels like it's been running the dominant world story for at least ten years now, and I know it's genuinely bad for my brain, and I suspect it's bad for everyone's.

It's not just wrong because the present is good and the past was terrible, it's wrong because there had to be a vision in the past of demanding so much more while they specifically faced the oppression we use to characterise certain types of period drama.

I'm working on a book proposal at the moment, the core thesis of which is "Democracy fails not when lies spread, but when verified reality can no longer alter incentive structures." and we're seeing it happen in real time. Which is good for the book, but bad for democracy.

Even if you call out the lies it doesn't matter, because any of the institutions responsible for any sort of accountability are completely worthless, so there's no cost to lying.
