It's completely normal to keep your distance from a boss while learning how it moves and then gradually play closer as you figure it out. Without contact damage, there's no satisfaction in managing to get right in the boss's face once you've mastered it. You're just waiting on a telegraph wherever.

I think they're aware that the show could be more focused, but a more-focused version of the show would end after two seasons. They're already working on s3 and they knew they would be.
