I mean, it was already Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys.

The reason a robot was wheezing was not central to the plot. Ebert mentioned it in his review and fans sent in letters to explain it. Instead of learning a new thing and moving on, he wrote an article about how he’s mad that this inconsequential fact wasn’t explained in full during the runtime.

But how is knowing obscure trivia for a fictional world “masturbatory”? I feel like that’s unnecessary denigrating of fans of an IP you don’t respect.
