I used to think my job was to “keep children safe.”
14 years later, I realise I was wrong.
Even with the best interventions, I didn’t achieve safety—just protection from significant harm.
I think this is a far more attainable, yet no less worthwhile, goal.

Social work feels like a teenager in an identity crisis—trying to be 50 different things without a clear sense of self.
But maybe this is a phase. Should we establish a more coherent identity, or embrace our complexity & focus on weaving our roles into a unified purpose.
What do you think?

Our goal in child protection is two-fold, reduce risk & increase safety.
We can’t eradicate risk; our aim is to reduce it enough to protect the child from undue harm.
We can achieve this by reducing risk; or by improving safety (and not changing the risk); or, a combination of both.
