The fact that Lockheed Martin’s stock rose since Feb 27th shows us that private companies trading weapons, mercenaries, airplanes etc are all increasing their profit margins as people from Sudan to Iran to Congo to Palestine are being murdered. Lockheed Martin is implicated in all four places.

Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts. City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."

β€œβ€¦disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”

Libraries are the best. Hard to believe their funding has been unchanged since 2010 and the BC NDP refuses to increase it.

At least 148 dead after reported strike on school, Iran says Iran has blamed the US and Israel for the strike; the US is looking into reports of the incident, while the IDF says it is

The mass murder of civilians in Gaza, the brazen attacks on hospitals and schools, without any accountability has created a new kind of warfare that should terrify and enrage all of us.

Next time someone hypes the potential climate benefits of LLMs, maybe think about how they enabled mass fabrication of "public" comments that killed an important climate policy. Just one harmful application of software that can quickly generate lots of truthy-sounding bullshit.

Fantastic episode on power, policy, and risk assessments. This analysis really echoes one of Paul Slovic's papers in 1999 where he stated that, "Whoever controls the definition of risk controls the rational solution to the problem at hand... Defining risk is thus an exercise in power."

in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period
