Though the vast majority of replies have been in agreement, I'm genuinely baffled by those people saying they "honestly can't see the difference".

Tom Baker's teeth have *literally changed shape* in certain shots because of reinterpretation. It's an episode of Doctor Who, not a glamour photoshoot.

I don't think there's any real demand for one to be honest!

Since yesterday's AI chat I've had a few requests/questions about what happened to all my old YouTube videos - God knows why - so I've just made (most of) them public again to avoid repeating myself. I'll probably take some back down again once I've settled on my long term plans.

So yeah, go nuts.

Postscript: Gallifrey Base have temporarily locked their Season 13 Blu-ray thread following some rather fervent discussion arising from the sharing of this video, which naturally I find utterly hilarious.

Be nice to each other folks. There are bigger hills to die on.

I won't be e-mailing the BBC angrily demanding an immediate recall and replacement discs.

I won't be grumpily sending my set back to Amazon for a full refund.

But the next time I want to sit and enjoy The Android Invasion, I won't be putting on the Blu-ray, and that's what ultimately saddens me.

If I was a total novice to Who, would I be as bothered? Maybe not. Certainly some people think it's a step up from DVD, and certainly from VHS. I've seen some say "it's not really noticeable" and we shouldn't be examining episodes this closely. But you're forgetting one thing:

WE'RE DOCTOR WHO FANS

You don't need to freeze frame and zoom in at 300% to notice faces look very sharp in some areas and oddly smoothed over in others. Long shots in particular now look incredibly detailed, but just like Styggron's village, it's not real. It's artificial, invented and to me feels intrinsically wrong.

With Season 13, it's clear a decision has been made to take AI processing up a notch. I can understand why. The Android Invasion's location work has always looked rough, caked in dirt and scratches, classic mid-70s BBC telecine transfers.

Which makes the sudden 'glow-up' all the more distracting.

I first noticed it creeping in with Season 15. Some of you who followed me on Twitter may recall rather anally pointing out the distracting smoothing of Tom's scarf when the trailer dropped in January 2024. I put it down to crap YouTube compression, but when the discs arrived, it was still evident.

And I don't doubt that AI has a place in modern restoration and will continue to do so. It can be a very useful, effective and transformative tool when applied with sensitivity and care, and the technology is clearly improving all the time at a rate that amazes us all.

But it's all about balance.

You'll also know I've been very complimentary of the restoration carried out on these sets in the past, not just on social media, but in the pages of DWM when I was kindly invited to review Seasons 8, 22 and 24 on Blu-ray. We've enjoyed some phenomenal work, clearly a great deal of labour and love.

Thanks to those of you who have watched, commented and shared elsewhere, I appreciate it.

I spent my evening making this video because I felt it worthy of discussion. Naturally some folk will think I'm nitpicking - and that's their right - but most of you know it comes from love of the show.

I've returned a box set for less, especially a 55 quid one! It's just whether you can bothered with the hassle, plus the risk of them not being able to source a replacement (they are Limited Edition, after all).

Foolishly decided not to order the Dr Who Season 13 Blu-ray online cos my missus is away and I didn't want to risk it arriving on release day and being left on the doorstep by the postie. Naturally everyone seems to have received it on Saturday and HMV/Fopp haven't got any stock instore. Deep joy.
