The structural disadvantage was created by real estate developer David Bohannon thwarting BART on the Peninsula to protect the profitability of his commercial developments, particularly the Hillsdale Shopping Center and maintain San Mateo’s racial exclusivity.

It's wild to watch San Mateo electeds argue that they should control the entire regional measure to fund transit because they are special snowflakes who are "structurally disadvantaged."

You know who is disadvantaged? The Bay Area urban centers, who are structurally under represented at MTC.

America is having a housing crisis because it chooses to have a housing crisis. Americans are being displaced because we want them to be displaced. Our cities are world capitals of homelessness because we invest resources in making them so.

Share the Road signs are intentionally dumb.

Share the Road signs are intentionally dumb.

It's time to stop using SHARE THE ROAD signs. They're deliberately vague and often misinterpreted. The real point of the signs: to remind drivers that bike riders have a right to use the full lane and that they need to be attentive and safe around riders. They don't connote both sides bullshit.

San Mateo halts public campaign financing plans Despite approving other campaign finance reforms, San Mateo decided to stop short of pursuing a public financing program for City Council candidates.

Proponents of subsidizing campaigns say it diversifies the pool of candidates, as it has historically consisted of those who are already retired or are wealthy enough to fund their own campaign which is why the other San Mateo City Council members oppose it. www.smdailyjournal.com/news/local/s...

Drivers should stop at stop signs and crosswalks for pedestrians regardless of whether the pedestrian looks both ways first.

The problem is far bigger than Jeffrey Epstein | Rebecca Solnit Treating the scandal as an aberration misunderstands the global epidemic of violence against women

"One of the reasons the epidemic of violence against women is so unacknowledged is because cases like these are talked about individually, and often treated as though they are shocking aberrations rather than part of a pervasive pattern that operates at all levels of society."

Housing is genocide sign seen at a NIMBY protest today against a mixed income high rise.

The new homes are less than a few blocks to a trolley stop.

And the neighborhood is majority white and middle to upper income.

Growth means fewer drivers Editor,

Let’s welcome more neighbors and fewer cars. Growth done right doesn’t mean more traffic — it means more students walking to school, seniors biking to the park or commuters catching the train/bus to work. That’s the future San Mateo deserves. www.smdailyjournal.com/opinion/lett...

New leaders aren’t coming some day in the future -- they’re already here.
Since the November election, more than 60,000 people have signed up with Run for Something to consider running for office -- joining our pipeline of more than 225,000 people who’ve ever signed up with us.

To put that in context: In the entirety of Trump’s first term -- all four years -- we saw 67,000 people raise their hands to run for office (including the folks I listed earlier! We’re likely to exceed that total by September 2025.

The biggest moments so far have been immediately post Election Day in November, the first big wave of DOGE firings, when Sen. Chuck Schumer folded on the continuing resolution fight without giving an inch, and when Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral primary against the old guard -- the last of those being our biggest organic candidate recruitment surge of the last 8+ years, with 10,000 new people signing up in just two weeks, inspired by seeing a young leader bring joy, love for community, and a focus on affordability win against the odds.

Of those folks signing up expressing interest, we expect about 10% to actually get on the ballot -- many of them will be running for local offices in 2026.

The Democratic Party is changing, and per every poll of the last six months, it couldn’t happen soon enough. These local candidates -- a vast majority of whom are millennials and gen Z, running in all 50 states -- are bringing fresh energy and a new perspective into the party.

Ontario court strikes down Ford government's plan to remove Toronto bike lanes | CBC News An Ontario court has deemed the province's plan to remove three major Toronto bike lanes unconstitutional. A spokesperson for Ontario's transportation minister said the government will appeal.

"The evidence shows that restoring lanes for cars will not result in less congestion, as it will induce more people to use cars and therefore any reduction in driving time will be short-lived, if at all, and will lead to more congestion," said Schabas in his decision.
