The main thing I’m getting fucked by recently is this invasive plant, Ailanthus altissima, the tree of heaven. It’s native to parts of China and Taiwan and invasive in the US. It’s a host plant for the spotted lantern fly which is a major invasive insect in the north east right now. If you cut it down it will just respond by sending up a bunch new trees from the roots. So instead you gotta apply herbicide in a specific manner at a specific time of year (fall). Since it’s about to be tree of heaven killing season I’ll be working on removing it wherever I see it & can access it. The herbicide costs like $75 a gallon. HOW TO REMOVE TREE OF HEAVEN 1. Wait til the fall, mid July - mid October will be the best time to apply herbicide effectively. Fall is when plants start sending sugars from their leaves to their roots, so this will allow the herbicide to kill the plant completely. 2. Cut wounds into the cambium of each individual plant. Don’t cut down the plant completely. 3. Apply glyphosate directly to the wounds on each plant, you can squirt it directly into the wounds or apply with a paintbrush or something. 4. At least 30 days after herbicide application, you can cut and remove the dead plant. note: it looks similar to some native species like sumac and black walnut so double check before you kill it.

Populations in an ecosystem have evolved together and developed intricate interactions. They are dependent on one another for survival and dependent on checks and balances in the ecosystem to keep and one species from dominating. When non-native species are introduced to an ecosystem by humans, they often dominate because local species haven’t evolved mechanisms to keep them in check.
