This is incorrect.

1. The opt-out for creators is channel-wide, not per-video. It's available in YouTube Studio right now.
2. The low-res versions aren't going away. YouTube will automatically generate multiple upscaled copies, but you can still choose to view the 144p/240p versions if you want.

Ok, annoying but necessary nuance here:

This is AI *upscaling*, not Gen ai. AFAIK, it doesnt scrape media or need data centers. No environmental or ethical concerns as of current info.

HOWEVER, I'd still opt out as it will play havoc with low res. It's like motion smoothing, you dont want it 😅

Youtube has announced that all low-res videos (i.e. older ones) are to be automatically AI upscaled to HD.
Creators can opt-out on a per video basis (but the channel may be long abandoned).

When researching props or behind the scenes, old videos are useful, but not if upscaling produces artefacts.

As I get older, it has become less and less shocking to me that being overly attached to the past often comes with regressive views based in conservatism because, well... that tracks, right?

When you think everything modern sucks and you can only find refuge in the past, you're telling on yourself.
