08.04.2025 01:08 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Text warning about an April 2 tariff: With this April 2 tariff, Canadian booksellers and publishers will face unsustainable new costs and customers will be faced with book prices beyond what they are willing to pay. Most books will be subject to the new tariff because they are warehoused in the US by publishers and distributors. Books have both US and CAD prices printed on the cover, making it difficult to increase prices to cover the tariff. Alternatively, charging the CAD cover-price and absorbing the 25% tariff (even short term) will bury many independents because the industry survives on an already small margin of profit. The tariff is detrimental to Canadian booksellers and publishers and will result in long-term negative effects to our literary community.
Canadians! ๐จ๐ฆ Book industry needs your help (incl. for ๐จ๐ฆ book creators like me, whose books are published and/or warehoused in U.S.).
Dept of Finance seeks feedback before April 2nd, 2025 re: tariffs, including tariffs on BOOKS coming into Canada from US: slowburnbooks.ca/april-2-tariff

I'm firmly in the middle. After a couple disasterous first drafts I realized would take ages to clean up, I found I do too much discovery during discovery writing. Now I use loose outlines based on structures like Hauge's six stage plot - not scene by scene, but just enough to keep me on track.

Same thing happened last time - both Supreme Court appointees promised Roe was the law of the land, and look where we are now. What's more frightening to me is that people still seem surprised by this pattern of behaviour.
