I aimed my view camera eastward across a basin toward a ridge etching the horizon. Between lay the accumulated sediment of once-loftier mountains. A place of blessed solitude, these flat drylands felt like an inland sea.

Young Palm, Palm Canyon, California
On a hot February day several years ago, I hiked along a shaded creek south of Palm Springs. Surrounded by thick groves of California Fan Palms, its largest natural stand thrived on the creek’s water.

My guess is that they have convinced themselves they'll come out of their time with Trump not only scott-free but also more famous and better off financially. Evidently, they are not considering the very real possibility that they'll get thrown under the bus.

A few years ago, I came upon a fawn nestled in the grass. It looked peaceful in death. The sea was calm, the air still, and the sun intensely bright. Needle Rock cast its long shadow across the beach.

It can be awkward growing up middle-class, surrounded by wealthy people. On the one hand, one becomes accustomed to their learned ways of interacting. On the other hand, and for the most part, they can't identify with the struggles of being financially challenged.

Water Drop, Ice Storm, Falmouth, Maine

A 2008 storm coated trees and power lines with thick ice. After it passed, I sat beneath bent, ice-coated willow branches and captured a drop striking a pool directly in front of the lens as the shutter clicked.
