Today's Google Trends report shows the ultimate paradox in modern-day life: We are all lonelyβtogether.
BUT the bigger takeaway for me from these searches is that people are trying to changing that βοΈ
We saw hawks! We saw cardinals! We saw dark-eyed juncos! We saw (many) mallards!
And we were just one small group in the more than 1 million people who participated in the event worldwide. Once it's submitted, this data helps scientists monitor trends in bird populations.
Earlier this month, I joined birders in Prospect Park for the Great Backyard Bird Count, when community scientists collect data on as many birds as possible before they start their spring migration. A reminder of how much wildlife I get to share the city with!

The death comes just two weeks after 4-year-old male right whale βDivisionβ was found deceased off North Carolina, following a serious fishing gear entanglement.
For a species that is down to only around 380 individuals total, any loss is a huge blow.
The second reported endangered North Atlantic right whale death this year and it isn't even March. A 3-year-old female.
For context, scientists think these animals can live until at least 70, but human activities kill them so often before that it's uncertain.

I've been seeing SO much road salt during and in the aftermath of the snowstorm, so just re-upping this piece I wrote last year about some of the sour salty side effects this can have.
PSA:Salt can also hurt your pets' paws so make sure you are being mindful π

The flooding and landslides that hit northern Sumatra in November decimated Tapanuli orangutan populations, which were already critically endangered. Another threat these apes have faced: dam development in their habitat.

After the US admin cancelled the $B Climate + Weather Disaster dataset, @climatecentral.org hired the scientists who ran it and set it back up.
Now the 2025 numbers are in: it's 3rd highest year on record and highest year w/o land-falling hurricanes.

It was a jarring display of the ocean's force and climate impacts playing out in real time in a place that is special to so many. This quote from geologist Stan Riggs will stick with me.
βThe ocean does not negotiate,β he said. βAnd thatβs what we have to remember.β
My newsletter yesterday was about the growing threat of homes collapsing into the sea in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Right before we hit publish, another house was claimed by the ocean. By the end of the night, four more had suffered a similar fate.

02.09.2025 21:33 β π 7 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0A lot of folks denied that the storm would have any impacts and criticized local and state governments for closing beaches and ordering evacuations. But Erin's made it clear that there are reasons for taking these steps, even if a storm is churning further out at sea. Stay safe this season, people!

Coastal towns in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic U.S. have been most affected, especially the Outer Banks. The storm also lashed out on the Jersey shore, where around 50 people had to be rescued last night from severe flooding.

Hurricane Erin has shown that a storm doesn't need to make landfall to cause trouble. Yesterday, I wrote about how Erin's size has fueled strong waves and rip currents along the East Coast, hitting shore towns esp hard during their busy season.

Hurricane season has begun amid chaos at the federal agencies that forecast and respond to disasters. Experts say the countryβs ability to deal with extreme weather is eroding - but the biggest impacts may not hit immediately or manifest in the most obvious places. 𧡠www.eenews.net/articles/cha...
