I like how in programming IDEs, I can right-click a variable, select refactor/rename-symbol, and instantly change that variable's name across the whole project. My kingdom for #writing / #screenwriting software that could do the same for character names, place names, and other proper nouns.

Haven't touched my political superhero feature screenplay since the election. It was a cathartic outlet for me. But now... eesh. I don't know. #scriptsky

Yeah, I feel like I want to start a chapter by describing whatever present we've gotten up to and then fill in what's happened since for that character in expositiony flashback.

If you're #writing a story with multiple POVs, how careful are you about tracking the progress of time? If weeks go by in one character's POV, have those same weeks gone by when you cut to the next character?

It'd make a nice release cadence for ANDOR-style arcs as well.

That way I could get a bit of a binge, but still feel like I'm keeping up with the conversation. Or I could spread em out across the week and not have to wait too long for the next batch of episodes .

Free idea for streaming networks: I know you like releasing episodes weekly to generate more discourse, but consider this... 3 episodes a week!

Actually, it’s not a sparkling monster because the real Frankenstein region of Switzerland was the friends we made along the way.

I’m guessing most of us do both, but which way do you lean?

What I mean by the latter is: the writer wouldn’t introduce the killer this late in the story, so it’s not Z, and it’s not X because they’re too much like the killer from the last season/book, so it must be Y.

What I mean by the former is: there was a handkerchief left at the scene and X is missing their handkerchief, so it must be X.

When reading or watching a murder mystery, are you more likely to figure out who dun it by the clues revealed within the story or by interrogating an imagined version of the story’s writer in your head?

I like that. I think I need to make b) stronger in my story and probably hint at a) early on

Does it make it more okay to withhold until the last minute if it’s a short story? Novella?

Do you think it works if a POV main character’s motivation isn’t fully revealed until just before the final confrontation where they act on it? Or is it necessary to know their true motivation early so you can ride the rollercoaster with them?

With screenwriting, I enjoy the efficiency of language. A spark of imagery, then trust the reader’s imagination to fill in the rest. I often remind myself that I can do that in prose as well. The more I describe the castle, the more I’m writing over what the reader had in mind when I said β€œcastle.”

And I can use that experience to write genre pieces that feel intimate and character-focused. I’ve learned a lot about compassion and drama and humor since my 20s. Maybe my writing isn’t particularly more serious than those first screenplays, but it’s certainly richer.

24.10.2024 14:29 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And yeah, almost 30 years later, all that experience does help. I’ve had so many different jobs (I’ve worked in retail, warehouses, video production, TTRPGs, political campaigns, non-profits, and tech) and hobbies. There are a lot of parts of me / versions of me that I can put into characters.

Now that I have more experience, one of the things I realized is that I really only want to write genre stuff: scifi, fantasy, superheroes, crime, espionage, mystery.

So I gave up. I decided that I needed more life experience first.

I first started writing screenplays in the 90s. I wrote 3 features and then moved out to Los Angeles. Didn’t work out. I quickly fell out of love with what I had written. It was all action genre stuff. It felt juvenile. I wanted to write something more serious, but I struggled to do so. #scriptsky

It helps that I don’t have β€œprofessional” deadline pressure. I have a critique partner which provides some level of accountability, but I’ve had no issue meeting those goals. In fact, I often feel like I’ve written more than I feel comfortable asking them to read before a meeting.

I used to dread writing, except for when I was particularly inspired. Mostly I loved having had written. Now I find joy in the process. But that might be because I’m only writing what I want to now.

One thing that is working for my writing is to have multiple projects going at once. I have a hyperfocus β†’ burnout cycle. Once I feel that I’m hitting the burnout stage, I can switch back to another project I have in progress (having had some time away from it helps) or start a new one.

For about a year now I’ve been writing again. Spec pilot and feature screenplays. Chapters of a fantasy novel (or maybe novella). A lot of outlines and worldbuilding documents.

The Last Proton sounds like a great title for a follow up to Tachyon Squadron.
