A stack of books of varying blue shades. The books are: Bat Eater, Voyage of the Damned, The Shadow Cabinet and Reaper Man.

I swear I didnโ€™t intentionally colour co-ordinate my current reads. On a side note, I have torn through Bat Eater. A perfect storm of anti-Chinese racism, Hungry Ghosts and anger. Read it!

[Scene is a DRINKS PARTY with various monstrous horror characters - proper grown-up, modern horror film type nightmare things - and they are standing around chatting. A little GREEN BLOB MONSTER called Dan is being introduced to the other monsters].

1
MONSTER 1 [introducing the little blob to the other monsters]:
Everybody, this is Dan

GROUP OF THREE MONSTERS:

Hi Dan!

2
MONSTER 2:
Pleased to meet you Dan, Iโ€™m Peter

3
MONSTER 3:
Iโ€™m Mary

MONSTER 4:
Iโ€™m Sean

4
MONSTER 1:
Peter is an extended metaphor for bereavement

5
MONSTER 1:
Mary is a manifestation of intergenerational trauma

6
MONSTER 1:
And Sean is a body-horror chimera expressing the cannibalistic dynamics of late-stage capitalism.

7
MONSTER 4:
And what do you, Dan?

8
BLOB MONSTER:
Iโ€™m a green blob that lives in the toilet and bites you on the arse.

9
MONSTER 3:
Goshโ€ฆ
So is that like a metaphor forโ€ฆ societyโ€ฆ orโ€ฆ?

BLOB MONSTER:
No.

10
BLOB MONSTER:
Iโ€™m a basic, old fashioned, meaningless horror movie monster. Iโ€™m a green blob in your toilet. I bite you on the arse.

11
[They all look disgusted]

12
[As the other monsters look awkward and drift away, Blob monster thinks]:

I hate parties

[ends]

My current act of petty rebellion is filling my tiny, quaint and very British village library with (mostly) queer horror.

I wonโ€™t lie, it was a difficult read (but essential), because of how well it nails the discussion of abuse. There were parts where I recognised my own confused, angry, self hating thoughts.

Highly recommend. Going to be thinking about this one for a while.

A photo of the book โ€˜Model Homeโ€™ by Rivers Solomon

๐Ÿ“šModel Home by Rivers Solomon: horror that revolves around trauma, identity, racism, family. Had to sit for a while and have a big think once Iโ€™d finished it. The way itโ€™s written is a good rep of how memory is warped by trauma, how we attack ourselves when weโ€™ve swallowed a story that isnโ€™t our own

Donโ€™t understand what Indefinite Leave to Remain means? Let me explain from a personal POV

If Reform get in, my Mum will be deported.

Taking out the emotion: she has lived in the U.K. for 50+ years, paid taxes, worked as a midwife in the NHS. She has contributed more to the UK than these racists.

No worries โค๏ธ Super excited for Hungry Ghosts! And while you say the duology isnโ€™t escapism - they are cathartic (is that weird?!). And so many points where I had to sit with something youโ€™d written about Miraโ€™s experience of being mixed race, because youโ€™d perfectly voiced something I long felt x

Fathomfolk and Tideborn are excellent, by the way. Everyone should read them, especially given current events. Sea creatures and humans trying to live together in Tiankawi; facing rising tensions, revolution, fear of marginalised folk in a fantastical ESEA-inspired backdrop. Also, dragons.

Itโ€™s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherdโ€™s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.

But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones youโ€™ve already enjoyed and including The Shepherdโ€™s Crown.

So the greatest way to honour Terryโ€™s legacy is to pull that book youโ€™ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy.
