And even if something has already “been discovered” or “been done,” I think the journey of discovering it for yourself is more important, even if it’s just learning about what someone else did. They did the same thing when they made that discovery; they just happened to be born at the right time.

Yeahhh the internet is a double-edged sword when it comes to this. But the better edge is that it’s so much easier to learn about something new or pick up a new skill than it was in the 80s.

And yeah, the most important thing is that you’re enjoying the interest you’re pursuing. If someone else puts you down for not being “good enough” at it, that’s on them.

You might not think you’re important to a hobby/interest community because yeah, there’s always someone better, and it sucks! I’m all too familiar with that feeling. But you could be the reason someone else discovers this interest.

Because they, like all of us, had a starting point. And at that starting point, they looked up to others for inspiration and guidance. Others who may have not been the best and may never be the best. But without them, they wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.

But if that’s the case, then what’s the point? There would be no community around that skill; people wouldn’t be brought together over this common interest they want to explore, because everyone is too afraid to do it. And that person who was the best? They probably wouldn’t exist.

I find myself agreeing with this philosophy sometimes because it’s really easy to succumb to it as a perfectionist. But if everyone that ever wished to pursue a specific skill were to follow that logic and give up at it, there would only be one person, the person that’s the “best” at doing it, left.

This might just be my life motto
