When viruses force the cell to make viral proteins, they also downregulate its production of native proteins using a special viral translation initiation factor (vIF4F), which has specificity to viral transcripts!

This interesting study concerns aging in WORMS πŸͺ±.

Why is it that only PLANT 🌱 researchers put their organisms’ names in paper titles?

Gedankenexperiment: Who would NOT feel deceived if a plant aging paper did not mention plants in the title?

I left Twitter when Musk started with the Nazi salutes.

Twitter has steadily progressed to generating and distributing explicit images of children.

Yet still, some friends and colleagues remain on the platform, seemingly unbothered (at least, not sufficiently).

I wonder, what will it take?

Unfortunately, that seems to have been warranted 😬

I need a mood booster, let's talk about capybaras.

Here's a capy demonstrating one of MANY ways they can move through the water: running along the bottom.

They're 'semi-aquatic' mammals, just like hippos, seals & beavers. They LOVE water.

Releasing alignism, a small tool that I have found useful for doing multiple sequence alignment in browser.

- The hard work was done by the awesome biowasm team!
- Does tree building too
- V fast compared to e.g., muscle on EBI
- Not tested that much!

Pint jar filled with blue dry beans.

Pint jar filled with blue dry beans.

A few years ago, through luck and vibes, I managed to produce this blue colored bean variety.

This was an early step in trying to answer the question, [paraphrased] "Why isn't blue as common as red in beans, even though they're both anthocyanins and the plant has the genes for both?"

Very cool!
GE made a grass easier to convert into biofuels.

Making plants more suitable to second-generation biofuel production is one of the coolest uses of GE.

A big open question is how well such plants resist bio- & necrotrphs. Plants ultimately evolved lignin for a reason.
