I noticed a change in the last few weeks in how the NYT describes gender affirming care. They now use the term "gender related care" in their coverage. This term had only been used sparingly (4 times) prior to this year. Now it's becoming ubiquitous in standard coverage.

So no, I'm not surprised to see Chomsky there. He has some great political stuff, he was a great debater at times, but his allegiance isn't with the oppressed, it's with ideas. And while there's certainly overlap between the two, they are not the same.

They are the kissing cousins of toxic leftists who are "just asking questions", or think we need to form alliances with monsters who we agree with one thing on, or those who think Holocaust deniers deserve a fucking platform.

What people might not know is Epstein had A LOT of friends in all walks of life, but particularly intellectuals. Scientists like Laurence Krauss and Steven Pinker were close friends of his, and Laurence Krauss even tripled down on his disgusting friendship going as far as victim blaming young girls.

There is a whole brand of person who thinks that the material world is a secondary concern to the "marketplace of ideas". That Holocaust deniers, or Charlie Kirk, just need to be debated out of existence, and their ideas will be shamed into defeat.

The point is, we only have as much free speech as we are "allowed", and we are seeing right now what happens when monsters get big platforms. Fascists don't argue to change minds, they do it to recruit, and boy have they recruited. Chomsky is partially complicit in this.

I don't believe in conspiracy theories but I do strongly suspect this was a huge reason why Twitter became what it is today.

This sounds counter intuitive to anyone who has a social media account literally anywhere. As a matter of fact, a lot of first hand accounts of BLM protests broke on Twitter, and they often became primary sources for the actual news outlets because they were so ahead of the game.

What I wish I could have told myself back then is that not all "free speech" is equal, and how much you have is very tightly wound up with how much money you have.

I don't believe that Chomsky is a Holocaust denier, and to be honest, that line stuck with me for many years and became the backbone of a political philosophy I stubbornly held on to until I spent 5 minutes online as an openly trans person.

Re: Chomsky + Epstein, speaking as someone radicalized in the 00's and listened to a lot of Chomsky. In 1980, he supported a French man that went to jail for publishing a book denying the Holocaust. He said "if you don't believe in freedom of all speech, you don't believe in freedom of any speech."

I genuinely thought that as a trans woman, if ceded some points with the gender critical crowd we could have a healthier conversation and arrive at better public policy. The problem is, they are getting crazier and more extreme. If you admit "trans women don't belong in women's sports" they agree, but call you a man the whole time. If you admit, "I understand I am a biological man, but this is how I want to live my life and talking about me like this is degrading" they scream about free speech. If you admit that hurtful language is part of free speech but you don't have to associate with people that degrade you, they act like the victim and call you a man and then say you should be thrown in an insane asylum. It's like this on everything. They are incapable of looking for a middle ground on bathrooms. They want maximalist policies on everything. They'd throw a fully transitioned, fully passing trans woman in male prison genpop and laugh as she got aids from being raped. I want a middle ground on so many of these polices. BUT THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM IS THEY DO NOT. They enjoy degrading us, it's fun for them. So, sisters. I genuinely don't know what to do. I think many of our most extreme ideas are bad. But theirs are worse. So if I have to pick, I choose us. I wish there were a political vehicle for compromise and medical safeguarding. But that just simply does not exist.
