The Tolkien Society is hosting an auction of books and collectibles!
The items were donated to the Society in a member's will. Some we have retained, but the rest will hopefully make someone's Christmas! All money raised will go back in the Society.

Constructions of Childhood in Tolkien’s Legendarium (2): Túrin Turambar's childhood
This is the second part of a longer piece on constructions of childhood in Tolkien’s legendarium.
For #TolkienTuesday: the second part (out of three) of my essay on childhood in Tolkien’s legendarium, this time focusing on Túrin Turambar and the tragic hero’s childhood.

In today’s piece I’m having some fun with nonsense insects and flowers on the moon in Tolkien’s story Roverandom. There may also be a call to artists… 🎨

Today’s piece for #TolkienTuesday #TolkienTrewsday examines Tolkien’s Silmarillion “beasts”, dinosaurs, and representations of the prehistoric past in Middle-earth. With thanks to @tattersdill.bsky.social for our recent conversation! 🦕

New #Tolkien book: Doomed to Die.
With artwork from Tom Racine, this satirical book is a literal A-Z of death in Tolkien, all in rhyme. This is very different from the "usual" type of Tolkien book, and should make for a fun publication. www.tolkiensociety.org/2025/08/doom...

The Sad Tale Behind Tolkien's Famous 1938 Letter to a German Publisher
On what happened to the original Jewish owners of the German publisher Rütten & Loening, who contacted Tolkien in 1938 about publishing a German translation of The Hobbit and prompted his famous response condemning Nazism.
Sad indeed.

A photograph of tropical forest surrounded by fog.
In Tolkien's works, Faerie is seen as the land of endless beauty and peril. Humility is required here, or disasters shall strike. This concept is also present in hutan larangan ("forbidden forest"), prevalent in various cultures in Indonesia. 1/8 🧵

On 1 August 2008: Pauline Baynes passed away.
One of Tolkien's favoured artists, her illustrated works include Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and Smith of Wootton Major. Her map of Middle-earth is notable for the amount of extra detail it includes. Photo © Brian Sibley

Even the noblest ideals become dangerous without humility or self-criticism. Fanatical conviction makes one see their vision of “good” as the only right — and unchecked righteousness easily turns into tyranny.

From Letter 246: "Gandalf as Ring-Lord would have been far worse than Sauron. He would have remained ‘righteous’, but self-righteous. He would have continued to rule and order things for ‘good’, and the benefit of his subjects according to his wisdom..."
