This looks cool. And, an up-to-date package for generating haplotype networks is very welcome.

It harkens back to the worst of days. Like when I had dysentery. Oh no…. here comes BioPerl… Guess I’ll suffer for a day to two.

It's hard to dislike something work-related more than I dislike BioPerl. But then I find myself in a white-hot rage because it's taking all day to install some random Bioconductor package.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

It’s out! 🐟 We compared three regeneration superstarsβ€”axolotl, zebrafish, and Polypterusβ€”to ask how animals regrow limbs and fins. We find shared core processes, and other programs fine-tuned by evolution in surprising, lineage-specific ways. tinyurl.com/mpftkn7y

That would be super cool to look at. I think the trick is that there are probably (many?) more taxa with super black plumage and structural color than have been identified, which makes that analysis difficult. That could just as easily be false... but I suspect across all birds it's likely.

SEM images of back feathers collected from all taxa included in this study showing the differences in their barbule morphology. The header text provides the sex, taxon, and collection information for each specimen, and header backgrounds are filled according to the color of the back plumage patch: black for adult males that are super black, gray for adult males that are black, bright green for adult males that are green, and olive green for adult females and immature males that are olive green. Pink scale bars represent 10 Β΅m.

Super black plumage was identified in birds as part of awesome work by Drs. Dakota McCoy (@reallymccoy.bsky.social), Rick Prum, and others.

Dr. Roberta Canton dug into one clade containing a taxon having super black plumage, _Lepidothrix_ manakins, to show that super black is relatively common...
