Interested in why public anti-immigrant sentiment is so geographically concentrated? Here's some work with @denis-cohen.bsky.social testing a new theory on how regional labour market risks and inter-regional migration shape long-term spatial polarisation. Just out in @bjpols.bsky.social ๐Ÿ‘‡

"Energy Transition, Financial Markets and EU Interventionism:
Lessons from the Ukraine Crisis" by Patrick Bayer, Lorenzo Crippa and Federica Genovese

A successful energy transition requires the reallocation of private capital away from fossil fuel assets to greener alternatives. This transition is typically hindered by investorsโ€™ focus on todayโ€™s returns. In times of crisis, however, credible and unambiguous political signals about the future profitability of green industries can steer investments towards low-carbon assets. Drawing on European Union interventions during the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we present an event study of daily stock market returns following the most salient policy announcements by the European Commission in 2022. Our analysis shows that markets for shares of EU-based energy firms were initially prepared to move capital to cleaner companies, suggesting support for the clean energy transition. However, the short-lived distributional effects materialized only for announcements that could unmistakably be understood as unwavering commitments to the EUโ€™s green renewal, while more ambiguous announcements did not have the same distributional implications. Our findings emphasize that repeated and unambiguous political signals during crisis episodes can create favorable market conditions, at least in the short-term, to support capital reallocation towards greener stocks.

From today, 111 jobs will no longer qualify for Skilled Worker visas, but a sizable number will still be able to recruit migrants.

In fact, of the 26,900 people who were granted a Skilled Worker visa between October and March, 76% were for jobs that will remain eligible.

New HMRC data show a sharp rise in the number of employee jobs held by non-EU nationals since the post-Brexit system was introduced.

From January 2020 to December 2024, the number of UK jobs held by Indian nationals grew by 565k. Nigerian nationals held 340k more jobs.

Abstract: How does anti-immigrant rhetoric by mainstream politicians affect norms of tolerance? How does this compare to similar statements made by radical-right politicians? Drawing on experimental evidence, we find that statements by mainstream politicians lead to more norm erosion than similar statements by radical-right politicians. Subsample analyses suggests that this is because statements by mainstream-right politicians erode norm perceptions of right-wing individuals, while those by radical-right politicians induce backlash among left-wing individuals, who hold closer to the norm in place. The latter effect (backlash by the left) disappears when similar statements are made by mainstream right politicians. We argue that this difference occurs because mainstream politicians represent the views of a larger part of the population or have a higher status. Our results highlight the pivotal role of mainstream politicians in enforcing or eroding democratic norms, and that similar political statements can have different effects depending on their sender.

Very happy that our paper (w/ @dziblatt.bsky.social & E Dinas) has been accepted @bjpols.bsky.social .

We've seen the center right increasingly adopt far-right rhetoric.

Our experiment in ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช finds that this erodes anti-prejudice norms *more* than when the far-right employs similar rhetoric.
