Interestingly, compensatory dynamics between species, where rare species increased in biomass after dominant species decreased in biomass following the disturbance, occurred in both model simulations and empirical data.

Why are you passionate about your research topic?
There is still so much unknown to be discovered in deep-sea research and especially in my field, lipid and metabolite research, that the explorer's heart is burning! We know that the samples are unique and offer insights into a completely foreign world that we want to explore.
Dr. Florence Schubotz, Organic Geochemist at MARUM, University of Bremen

What impact does your research have?
We need to understand what makes marine ecosystems resilient - also to be able to assess how we can best protect the oceans.

Your research in short: What is the most exciting thing at the moment?
As an organic geochemist, I am very interested in how carbon in its various forms moves through marine biota, the ocean and the sea floor - today and in the past, and how these processes interact with the climate.
