Drone strikes on Amazon Web Services facilities this week in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain highlight the vulnerability of cloud facilities β€” prominent symbols of US tech power in the region and hard to defend against air attack.

Fars News Agency, an outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Thursday that Iran targeted Amazon and Microsoft facilities in recent drone strikes.

Experts say Amazon’s facilities were likely targeted by Iran. Microsoft said it had not experienced any outages in the region.

The strikes mark what is believed to be the world’s first military attack against the US β€œhyperscalers” that dominate the global cloud computing market.

That could create a chilling effect on the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s plans to spend billions of dollars on local AI infrastructure in the coming years, a crucial plank of the oil-rich states’ efforts to diversify their economies.

β€œThe Iranians view data centres as part of the conflict,” said Matt Pearl, a director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think-tank.

The thing I've been kicking around with "law of war" types is whether a data centre that enables both a hospital and a drone that targets a hospital is a legitimate military target. A lot of these data centres plausibly do both.

The best time to question the wisdom of colocating civil and military capabilities in the same data centre was a couple of years ago. The second best time is now.

I'm just old enough to have done comms for one of the old telco behemoths in the 90s when securicrat Cold War thinking was giving way - against fierce resistance - to open networks. Our entire data architecture since then is premised on these NOT being targets. Hard to overstate the impact.

the dumbest form of politics is yelling at voters after you lose. if you lose it is *always* your fault. every confounding factor in the universe is your job to overcome. if you take a position that is unpopular and don't adjust to learning that, you are bad at running for office.

Anything Could Happen in Iran At most, Iran can hope to wound America or Israel when attacked. But its own weapons can never win a war.

What this week's rise in the Dollar means US reserve currency status remains intact, but that won't stop the Dollar from falling

Robin Brooks: Something really unusual happened yesterday. While oil was pushing above $90 per barrel, the Dollar fell. That's very significant because we'd normally expect to see the oil spike drive the Dollar higher. We've transitioned back into a weak Dollar world...

Oh, Crenshawβ€˜s party has relentlessly focused for decades on helping misinformation and lies thrive, and now he’s upset the leopard came to eat his face?

The billionaires that run the GOP have done everything they can to pollute our media environment because they know they need lies to win.

Peter Wehner: There's a callow, performative, light-as-air quality about Hegseth... he tries so hardβ€”too hardβ€”to project a tough-guy persona, as if a lot of unresolved issues, a lot of brokenness, are playing themselves out in his life. www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
