So many things to love about this NYC result, from the policy possibilities it creates and generational change it delivers to the rebuttal of the naked and cynical Islamophobia Mamdani's opponents tried to stir up and the schadenfruede over dirtbag Cuomo's big sad. Today, I❀️NY!!

In this roundtable, we'll discuss the application process, the institutional dynamics that come with this career transition, and professional development beyond landing the first job. We designed this discussion with both early career researchers and the faculty who support them in mind.

It is not normal to absorb this much info about extreme violence. It is not normal to constantly think that only by pure chance, you could have been subjected to the same. I feel like something is eroding in our humanity, because we numb our feelings to deal with the terrible reality we live in

i am less convinced that AI is going to replace jobs than i am that companies are going to cut jobs on the premise of AI replacing them and then hire those people back as contractors for less money and fewer protections, because that’s what’s happened a *lot* in the last 20 years.

Text: β€œThe world’s solution to safety and security, for Jews and for others, continues to be inextricably linked to the nation-state and its sovereignty β€” to militarized borders and an obsession with demography. As modern history has shown, such an idea always has the potential for exclusionary politics and mass violence. Perhaps most damaging of all is how such a solution propagates a diminished understanding of safety: It is the state that needs defending, not people. It is the state that holds sovereignty, not people. This logically leads to policies that label certain elements of society acceptable losses in times of conflict β€” sacrifices in the name of the state. And it facilitates an essentialist view of the world that cannot include the history of human migration and leaves no room for the fluidity of identity.”

Text: β€œA reconsideration of the nation-state as the sole source of safety, as well as the notion of a state-based sovereignty, is essential. It is people who have sovereignty: People have the right to a dignified life, to self-determination, to control of their environment and a say in their future. And people can only be safe collectively by ensuring those around them are also safe. States are the way we organize our world, and they can provide forms of safety, but often narrowly, fleetingly and by denying safety to others. A state that continues to deny sovereignty cannot sustain safety. In the name of sovereignty and safety, it will continue to cause violence. And a garrison can only protect for so long.”

Palestinian scholar @danaelkurd.bsky.social learned of the 10/7 attacks while visiting the Jewish Museum of Berlin. She reflects:

I've had a lot of convos w/ folks confused about the crackdown in Germany against the most basic support for Palestinians. This is deeply tied to Germany's Holocaust remembrance culture, which happens to be something I study. Here's a thread of resources in English for those who want to learn. 1/

Horrific xenophobic language from the leader of a purportedly center-left party, mirroring the Tories in the UK and Trumpists in the US, and a reminder that racism and white supremacy benefit white liberals & leftists as much as the right.

This sort of language legitimizes the racist policing of brown/queer bodies in Berlin that has escalated over the last few days. It’s always been complicated to be Jewish and racially ambiguous in this city. Things are getting worse.
