Baby-naming magnate, author of ‘Death by Halloween.” On Cinema, Dwarf Fortress, light trolling. I will NOT be discussing kayaking.

Reading about other people’s fortresses is a totally valid way to play DF.

06.09.2025 20:30 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Based on the overall comfort most of the citizens currently have with their own nudity, however, my suspicion is that shame would be more likely to die off over time rather than run rampant in the population, at least provided the colony can survive long enough to spawn a few more generations.
06.09.2025 20:29 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0So far, the young dwarf's mood remains at max happiness, but only time will tell. If things get bad, I might consider sectioning off the three most shameful dwarves from the others. After all, they already have their own military squad due to their constant need to lift their mood with training.
06.09.2025 20:24 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A detail from a character profile in Dwarf Fortress shows a dwarf's most recent thoughts and feelings: "I am uncovered. This is so embarrassing..." He is embarrassed to have no shirt. He is embarrassed when uncovered. He is embarrassed to have no shoes.
In line with my speculation that shame is learned in Dwarf Fortress, Buck was also feeling nudity-based shame at the exact same time. After dodging shame for 18 years, perhaps due to his childhood habit of playing in his parents' room, he had a drink with the wrong guy and suddenly saw he was naked.

Update for Dwarf Fortress of Bronzeshort: The first fortress-born child, known simply as "The Unclothed," has had his first encounter with nudity-based shame just 4 months into his 18th year. The shame was felt while socializing with his only non-family acquaintance and expedition leader, Buck.

01.09.2025 21:57 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I wish I’d seen it happen. A year later, I’ve only seen him remember or dwell on the shame. I missed him experiencing it for the first time.
01.09.2025 21:55 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Needless to say, I will be following this child very closely to see if I can find evidence of him mirroring the emotions of others.
31.08.2025 23:09 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I've heard Tarn say that Dwarf Fortress players often attribute more depth of narrative to interactions that are far simpler under the hood, but this explanation of secondhand shame expressing itself in an emotionally sensitive child makes a lot of sense to me.
31.08.2025 23:07 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Interestingly, this child possesses the trait of being "swayed by emotions." This trait is elaborated on in a tab: "easily swayed by the emotions of others."
The child also has an adult friend who is constantly embarrassed about his nudity. Could his shame be coming from the shy miner, 'Cog'?
This had led me tosuspect that nude shame was learned when clothing rotted off the body, something these children have never experienced. This new data shows that more is going on.
(I know there are likely known answers to all this stuff, but I enjoy speculating about it more than reading the wiki)
A character overview from the game, Dwarf Fortress, for a 1-year-old dwarven child named Thikut 'Storytime' Delererith. The following information about the child is displayed: - The child has a pet war dog - The child is greedy, recovers quickly, sickly, not musical, swayed by emotions, and merciful - The child is healthy - The child is carrying toy miniature forge made of electrum - The child is thinking "I played make believe. I enjoyed that" - Apart from his enjoyment of make believe, he has felt: enjoyment after playing with a mini-forge, humiliated dwelling upon being uncovered, content being near a waterfall, euphoric due to inebriation, blissful after sleeping in a bedroom like a personal palace, blissful after remembering sleeping in a bedroom like a personal palace, content after eating a pretty decent meal, delighted remembering watching a performance, content remembering being near to a waterfall, enjoyment after playing with a puzzle box, fondness remembering making a friend, and enjoyment after playing with a toy hammer.
Big news from the nudist Dwarf Fortress, Bronzeshirt: first shame emotion has appeared in the second generation, felt by the 6th child, who is one year old. None of the other 5 children have ever appeared to feel shame at being uncovered in their collective 46 years of life (the oldest is 17).
