The event brought together researchers from 14 nationalities, from Europe to Japan, through Central Asia and the Near East.
It concluded on a moving note as L. Iakovleva (Kyiv) reminded us of the challenges of doing science amid geopolitical turmoil — ending with a heartfelt “Vive la paix!” 🇫🇷🕊️

This inspiring meeting, supported by the GPR Human Past and my project Threads, was initiated by our dear colleague T. Tsanova, a former PACEA PhD student.
It celebrated her rediscovery of Bacho Kiro Cave and her findings showing H. sapiens in SE Europe 45 ka ago.

With @lucdoyon.bsky.social , we discussed how beads and bone tool technology can help trace the dispersal of Homo sapiens across Eurasia.
Our colleague N. Zwyns (PACEA) shared new insights on the IUP in mainland Asia (~45 ka), and P. Zhang (PACEA) presented on stone tool tech in China MIS 3.

🐚 🔬Microscopic analyses by @solangerigaud.bsky.social revealed that perforated shells show no wear, and pigment staining comes from nearby hematite. With 14 intact shells, little/no wear, and high fragmentation, the evidence supports a shell ornament workshop (8/20)
