The best thing about lecturing on the Reformation is the songs you can use as slide titles

Stairway to Heaven
Knocking on Heaven’s Door
Faith
I’m a Believer
Hammer Time
Nine-ty Five
Personal Jesus
Paradise City

It’s maybe practice - the activity of belief - but also a confidence in the object of your belief? Abraham was a β€œfather of the faith(s)” but then that praying lady is a woman of faith?

I’d say that religion is the formalised entity (eg Christianity) but faith is where it interacts with a person or community (eg I am a Christian). And then belief would be the shared or individual confessions (eg I believe in the Father…)

Sure - thanks, good idea!

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I just don’t want to appear (or worse, be!) one of those bully academics. But it’s also ok to disagree I guess. Thank you

15.02.2026 22:40 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I have no basis to judge him as a scholar, good or bad - I hope he’s good! I may look to write a response in the same publication. This is helpful, thanks

Who has said this?

15.02.2026 22:38 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is very Hot Fuzz

15.02.2026 21:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s partly because I refute their ideology - they’re using their academic knowledge to advocate for a position I deeply disagree with

15.02.2026 20:49 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

By popular, I mean written for a popular audience. Evangelicals Now - not massive circulation, but public in a certain sector

15.02.2026 20:47 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Any advice please? I want to push back, but not kick down

15.02.2026 12:30 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Genuine question - a PhD student wrote a popular article that I deeply disagree with (it was pro Christian nationalism), but I don’t want to do a social media pile on. I’m a salaried PhD with a much larger following, so am aware of power dynamics. But he’s discussed his piece on social media

Also, if you’re a tax-evading billionaire and you need to lie about immigrants because they’re somehow a threat to the country you apparently love, pay your taxes here and pay your workers

Anyway, to love another person is to see the face of God

12.02.2026 19:52 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Conversations around immigration are necessary, but the language matters. I hate that I live in a country where the far right is part of the national debate. Farage, Lowe, Ratcliffe, Braverman, et al, have poisoned us

12.02.2026 19:52 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

β€œTo love another person is to see the face of God”

One the most insidious things the anti-immigration voices have done is reduced immigrants to their economic output. And so I hear myself wanting to say β€œbut this person does XYZ”. No, they’re people who are intrinsically deserve respect and dignity

12.02.2026 19:52 β€” πŸ‘ 15    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

How about those who are anti-immigration be required to insist that they only use British NHS staff when they next go to hospital. Self-select the kind of care you want, and see what contribution non-British peoples make to our society

12.02.2026 17:18 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I'd also add that the response from Reform, to threaten to defund Bangor, shows why they are empty of any civic use. They are simply a collection of empty responses to any given situation. This is why they should be debated, to expose their sham

11.02.2026 16:57 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I hope someone at Oatly quoted Bart Simpson, telling the dairy industry not to have a cow (man) over this

11.02.2026 13:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The decision at Bangor is terrible. Free speech - especially in a debate society - includes views you can’t abide. All this does is foster the Reform narrative that they are the plucky outsider. Debate them and show them up for what they are

None of us are ready for the fear that the toilet brush might have decorated the upstairs landing

Just had to wrestle the toilet brush off the dog

I listen weekly to new episodes, and I like the format. Today’s was just…the academic kept saying how much she resented Christianity (because of her dad, a vicar), and then it just became lazy where actually valid criticisms would be useful

09.02.2026 12:55 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Which isn’t to say historians can’t interrogate the worst offences of the Church - such as the murder of Hypatia - but this necessary critique is more potent if it is historically accurate
