Fortunately I carry anti-anxiety meds for my dogs that are safe more my equines in an emergency but frankly I shouldn't have to do that. It's really tough getting equine vets on board for behavioral meds unless it's part of post-op care and it's so sad!

In case you've ever wondered what it's like being empathetic toward and mindful of equine emotions in a world that's very Not, I requested trazodone for my horses' travel and my vet called me interrogating me about why I'd even consider asking for trazodone.

Fellow Animal Empowerment abbreviated logo in maroon over a pink background. The logo shows "FAE" in all caps with a horse approaching a crouched human in the grass above it. There's a fancy divider between the logo and the blog post snippet which reads:
"Between gear to force postures and movements appealing to our own eyes, damaging to our horses' intricate bodies, and the laundry list of busted myths we choose to continue following, traditional horsemanship problems have deep-seated issues that align with the ways in which our society functions. We say the horse is a willing and happily engaged participant, a dance partner in a routine we choreographed collaboratively with them, but we taught the dance through knotted halters, thin and sharp, strategically placed on sensitive areas, flailing ropes, which peak their eyelids and show off their sclera, and lashing whips, causing them to kick up their heels, flap their tails, and be laughed at for being βsilly.β The training practices commonly used then, and still today, rely heavily on intimidation, oppression, punishment, an unfair power dynamic, control and coercion, and placing ourselves at the top of the superiority chain; pushing horses below us. Inferior. Small. Unimportant in comparison to us."
Below this block of text is a divider with horses galloping in the same color as the logo on top.
A snippet of a piece I'm writing right now β€οΈβπ₯

Whenever I see people working with horses using R+ my heart feels so full; I could actually drop a few tears. Your horse trusts you, feels safe with you, and heard by you, and that's so beautiful! Not all horses are so lucky.

Hot take: training that operates off of fear, pain, or intimidation isn't real training. All you're really training or teaching the animal is to be on edge and have a pessimistic outlook on life.

Bay welsh pony with a blaze and white/silver ticking across his body, he wasn't roan last year but almost looks it this year? He wears a zebra print fly mask and behind him is a palomino overo in an all black fly mask with generous ear room so the tips flop over lol
Last summer getting masks on both these boys was a struggle, if not impossible. They were NOT fans of having things covering their adorable little faces! Got them on yesterday and it took some time but FAS was minimal and flies are out of the eyes πͺ°

Things have slowed down a bit so I'm hoping to have some blog posts to share shortly and finally will be giving my time and energy to my upcoming, revised Equine Essentials course. I will be shifting focus to creating more virtual services and spaces for the time being. ππ¦

He's a reverse round pen FIEND, absolutely loves movement based work and needs a high ROR currently for slower, more relaxed work. He's never been ridden or driven but with consistent training and exercise, I don't think it's out of question!

Hotshot is aged around 14-18yrs based on teeth and surrenderer's info, I would guess around 14hh, and a hackney pony. He currently lives out with two geldings and a donkey stud full time on a track system.

Send me your fave halters for these guys and their funky heads. Currently using a small horse halter but want something that'll really fit the new guy's sweet face and sweeter personality. π

We need to stop viewing training as this task that can be completed, constantly seeking perfect performance, and instead view it as a tool to guide and support our animals in a human-centric world, and to build strong, healthy relationships with them.

Big chesnut gelding sporting his winter fluff. He has a bright star on his forehead and hind socks. He's wearing a colorful halter with a geometric pattern on it, it's mostly cyan, pink, and yellow, attached is a rainbow lead rope. His ears are pricked forward and his eyes are soft as he takes a step toward the camera.
Similar photo but he's now actively walking so his head has dropped and relaxed
The horse who changed everything for me. π

Trying to show people that food can (and should) be used in training, especially with horses, is honestly one of the most exhausting things. Even wilder is when they don't listen to folks like you two who also use trad methods and can like "relate" more to these people lol.
