School librarians are freaking out. The site is used a lot, esp for middle school. And nonfiction that isn't narrative or bio - such as country fact books - has been decimated in kidlit to the point where it doesn't really exist anymore outside little kid books, so no replacement for the site.

The Latest From IMLS and What You Need to Prepare For Right Now It’s only been a little more than a month since the current administration dropped an Executive Order related to funding and projects from the Institute for...

This week's news from the IMLS should be a reminder that America 250 is a real thing and it should be a call to even more action. We're about to be hit with propaganda through our educational institutions, "American public": buttondown.com/wellsourced/...

also, you should pay attention to who is always looking for the new socially acceptable target/s. there are a frighteningly large number of people who will co opt any movement they can to hurt others with any convenient and relevant justification. you just need to pay attention.

Libraries continued to provide critical services and develop innovative programs and services, despite the challenges they faced in 2024. Learn more and see which books face the most censorship challenges in this year's State of America's Libraries Report:

I get why techbros and their ilk like gen-AI: artists and writers to them are just an obstacle to be bypassed. But I'll never get an author/artist/musician who uses it. "I want to be a writer." No you don't. You fetishize ideas but hate the work. You don't respect the craft or its practitioners.

πŸ“’ PLEASE CALL/EMAIL YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES!!!!

as someone who has worked in public libraries in both rural and urban areas, this cut will hurt libraries… but it will also hurt the people who rely on libraries and the resources we provide.

You cannot look at harm in isolation. It requires enablers & Dems have dutifully a played the part for decades because both parties support the neocolonial capitalist state & will use its power to quash resistance. Hold all harm accountable. It doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Enablers get no passes.

am i wrong or isn’t a boycott meant to not have a set end date beyond β€œwe’ll stop boycotting when you meet our demands”???? i’ll still boycott target but it just makes me wonder how effective it will actually be when the company knows how long the boycott pressure will last

A very frustrating thing is happening where people think this is just a uniquely American problem. It's happening all over Global North countries. The GERMANS are struggling to beat back Nazis.

Librarians reading 30,000 books in Livingston Parish to check for explicit material Livingston Parish libraries have found a solution for the community's concerns about the possibility of sexually explicit material in children's books: read every single book on the shelf.

Shelves for young adult books in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, are empty.

That's because the librarians have to read 30,000 books to check for "explicit content."

(No such thing exists.)

(This is a TREMENDOUS waste of taxpayer dollars).

A few of my favorite books by trans authors:

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, a brilliant blend of sci-fi and fantasy and a love letter to music, food, and Asian-American immigrant communities:

u gotta compliment ur friends. i understand the impulse to stop urself from being a reply guy, but i promise it's not cringe, commenting on ur friends stuff and giving specific compliments about aspects u liked is the kind of thing that can make a person's whole day

these are the kinds of things that some adults think are β€œgood” for children because they want to encourage kids to read more challenging works, but just end up fostering a lack of interest in reading that may continue with them for the rest of their lives.

I’m curious about what’s going on here. Is this from a public library? What right or reason do they have to tell patrons what they can’t check out? Besides which, don’t the kids have books that their school makes them read? Let them have their Wimpy Kid!

i say this as much for myself as for anyone reading this. we cannot get burned out before the work has even started. that’s exactly what they want. we owe it to ourselves and the people we’re fighting for to create a sustainable resistance.

Excerpt from Anxious People by Fredrik Backman, chapter 72: β€œThe truth. There isn't any. All we've managed to find out about the boundaries of the universe is that it hasn't got any, and all we know about God is that we don't know anything. So the only thing a mom who was a priest demanded of her family was simple: that we do our best.
We plant an apple tree today, even if we know the world is going to be destroyed tomorrow.”

These are very good suggestions, but a few key ones are missing: attend library board mtgs and speak in favor (many are on zoom), donate $, and vote for measures and bonds to increase funding. Patrons have real power. Don't let a handful of bigots destroy your library.

Friends, I keep seeing "get a library card!" posts and while yes, that is helpful, it doesn't really mean much unless you *use* it. And just using it won't save programs, funding, or protect from bans. You have to get involved.
