Dude has flaws in his work - he absolutely has recurring crutches in his writing (characters arguing over pointless minutiae, etc.) and the DCU definitely needs to get fresh voices into it like yesterday but he's still definitely one of the most humanist creatives in the superhero machine

It's GOTG3 and SUPERMAN that are the most emblematic of what I am talking about - the former rejecting the idea that life can or needs to be "perfect" and showing how destructive that pursuit is to the soul and body, the latter underscoring that to be human is to be a mess, to make mistakes

I make this point in an upcoming podcast but I think I figured out why I like Gunn's comics adaptation work: across SUPERMAN, PEACEMAKER, and GUARDIANS, his protagonists generally represent life - in all its awkward, earnest messiness - while the antagonists are essentially the antithesis of that
