In the not-quite-final episode of VdGG podcast Inside The Generator, the panel delivers its verdict on 2016's Do Not Disturb.
Was the return to a more 'classic' VdGG sound welcome or not? Should VdGG make another album?

Yeah, Priest is pretty more-ish

Fantastic vintage Friars flyer from 1972 featuring the subjects of my two books! #hawkwind #vdgg

When I spoke to Judge Smith for my Hammill/VdGG book, and found out about The Kibbo Kift, a remarkable musical he'd written in 1976 with Maxwell Hutchinson, I went on a mission to get this fantastic song cycle released!

Early example of the terror that HM inspired in the average NME hack. What's interesting about Priest was their unconditional embrace of the HM tag, something which I think even Sabbath were wary of. Oh, and great pic of Mr Halford, who ironically looks like he could be in a new wave band here...
27.02.2026 09:16 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0He certainly should be a lot better known
24.02.2026 21:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think "bizarre" is fair enough for a few of them, certainly if you were in any way new wave SF averse ;-) I like Sladek best when he's not just zany for the sake of it, as I think some of these stories are...

24.02.2026 15:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In The Happy Breed, AI infantilises humanity for safety's sake, while The Momster is an overbearing corporate droid. And in the title story, mechanical robots run riot in a plot to rid America of a childish, despotic president... Also features various SF writer parodies, inc Iclick As-I-Move... 3/3
24.02.2026 15:23 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0To the point of being nonsensical - yet Sladek's prose is always funny and perfectly turned, even as his plots run around like headless chickens. On saying that, at least half of them make sense, and still feel creepily relevant, particularly his overriding theme of machines taking control of us 2/3
24.02.2026 15:23 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My slow tour of classic SF gets back in gear with John Sladek's 1973 short story collection The Steam-Driven Boy. I'm really fond of Sladek, having discovered his other collection Keep The Giraffe Burning in my local library as a young teen - but some of the pieces here are terrifyingly bizarre 1/3

22.02.2026 23:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah, this rewatch was driven by nostalgia ;-) Bradbury certainly writes in a completely different way to most SF authors. There's a Mars-set story called The Blue Bottle which isn't in TMC (though should be) which is just fantastic...

The Martian make-up and costume design is fantastic, the soundtrack is also pretty great, and some of the individual scenes are often quite eerie, particularly the despairing Martian appearing as Jesus (played by Jon Finch, of Jerry Cornelius fame!) in the church 2/3 @breakfastruins.bsky.social
22.02.2026 20:54 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Rewatched The Martian Chronicles, the 1980 TV miniseries I first saw at the age of 12... Critics have noted its turgid pacing, and even Ray Bradbury described it as 'boring'. It's also pretty cheap-looking in places, with some particularly poor model work. And yet, there's lots to like as well 1/3
