And so, we reach the last frame... Here's the final episode of VdGG podcast Inside The Generator, where the panel reflect on their journey through the band's discography, and each select a song to play that hasn't already been aired. Listen here from 00:32:04 - progzilla.com/the-progress... 1/2

Born on this day in 1945, Robert Newton Calvert... Like Peter Hammill, he saw 'rock music' differently, and believed it could explore both new worlds and dangerous visions.

Here's the first piece I wrote about him: www.daysoftheunderground.com/post/the-gua...

Interesting review of VdGG's World Record here (from short-lived UK music monthly Album Tracking, Nov 76), which describes them as "the world's only real science fiction band" and suggests that PH is rock's equivalent to Harlan Ellison...

Ah, thanks Andrew, really pleased to hear that! We're going to be doing a monthly PH solo album thing as part of our next thing...

They had some proper corporate label PR behind them in 1999 with the release of the (barely pronounceable) Epocheclipse compilation, but not so much in 2000 - that would have absolutely affected things like listings...

From my last visit to the British Library... This may well be the first proper piece that Hawkwind had in MOJO, from July 1999: a Buried Treasure appraisal of Space Ritual (inc an interview with Dave). Plus a news story in the front of the mag re a Brixton Academy reunion show that never happened...

Yep, tried to get a book endorsement from Bruce, but didn't hear back ;-)

Rob Halford of Judas Priest on Peter Hammill of Van Der Graaf Generator
YouTube video by Rockin Pins Rob Halford of Judas Priest on Peter Hammill of Van Der Graaf Generator

This is interesting... www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvFP... I love Halford and those early JP albums, but I'm absolutely certain he's been asked this before ;-)

I've always thought this track is pretty Hammill-esque... www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSF8... (ha, YT segued it into Too Many Of My Yesterdays!)

Grumblings online about the short, cursory nature of this year's Brit Awards in memoriam section, but it did include Simon House... (You can read my obituary for Simon here: www.daysoftheunderground.com/post/prog-in...) #hawkwind #bowie

Zones was one of the first Hawkwind albums I bought... As John says, Running Through The Backbrain is a highlight.

In the not-quite-final episode of VdGG podcast Inside The Generator, the panel delivers its verdict on 2016's Do Not Disturb.

Was the return to a more 'classic' VdGG sound welcome or not? Should VdGG make another album?

Early example of the terror that HM inspired in the average NME hack. What's interesting about Priest was their unconditional embrace of the HM tag, something which I think even Sabbath were wary of. Oh, and great pic of Mr Halford, who ironically looks like he could be in a new wave band here...

I think "bizarre" is fair enough for a few of them, certainly if you were in any way new wave SF averse ;-) I like Sladek best when he's not just zany for the sake of it, as I think some of these stories are...

In The Happy Breed, AI infantilises humanity for safety's sake, while The Momster is an overbearing corporate droid. And in the title story, mechanical robots run riot in a plot to rid America of a childish, despotic president... Also features various SF writer parodies, inc Iclick As-I-Move... 3/3
