In this photo, the Balny has "柏年" written on its bow.
According to the footnote at the link, Fr wrote the shipnames in Chinese characters when dispatched to China, so this is likely one of them.
"柏年" is pronounced "Bǎi nián," which sounds a bit similar to "Balny."

In Mei Yuan (Měiyuán), Mei means "splendid" in Chinese, and Yuan means field or origin.
However, just as Měiguó refers to the USA, Mei Yuan means an American field or origin.

そして、復元性改善の目的でバルジを装着したこともあって速力は21ノットに低下しており、天山、彗星等の新鋭機の運用は不可能になった。
このため、船団護衛に終始したが11月17日夜、アメリカ潜水艦(SS411)Spadefishの発射した魚雷を受けて沈没した。

駆逐艦天津風や島風に試験的に搭載されたものですら40 kg/cm²、400℃あった上に、戦前に竣工し3年間も放置されていたボイラーは簡単に動かせるものではなかったのである。
「われわれは盟邦ドイツの技術の優秀さにとうていついて行けなかったともいえる」と日本の造船官は回想しているが、実はドイツ本国でもボイラーの爆発が頻発しており、扱いに困る代物だったのである。
結局、広工廠にあった実験用大型艦ボイラー2基を流用することになり、飛行甲板・格納庫甲板等を切り開いて機関部を入れ替えた結果、1944年3月にようやく竣工した。

その際、サイズ的に2層の格納庫も可能だと考えられたが、建造時間の短縮を優先した結果、Taiyou級と同じ1層となった。
ただし、搭載機は常用27予備6計33機と大鷹級の27-30機より若干多かった。
1943年12月15日、神鷹は大和級4番艦用の資材も流用して竣工したが、すぐに工廠に引き返した。
問題は機関部だった。
タービン・エレクトリックは水上機母艦に改装されたアメリカ製の給油艦神威で経験済みだったが、搭載されていたボイラーは圧力50kg/cm2、温度470℃の高温高圧缶だったのである。

神鷹は、ドイツ客船シャルンホルストを改造した空母である。
旧日本海軍は1942年6月のミッドウェー海戦での空母の大量喪失により1939年9月以来神戸港に停泊しており、乗員もシベリア鉄道で帰国したこの客船に目をつけた。
大鷹級航空母艦に改装された新田丸級貨客船より大きく、それでいて23ノットと優速だったからである。
1942年9月21日、戦後2倍の代価を支払うという約束で購入された船は呉工廠に回航された。
正確な図面は入手できなかったので、現場の努力によって改造図面は作成された。

文字の変遷

　江戸時代には戸籍がなく、おそらく一般人も公式に使っていないだけで苗字のある者が多く、戸籍に届けるにあたって他と分けるためにわざとそのような苗字をつけたケースを届けたケースもあると思います。
　なお、熊谷から富士山まで首都圏中央連絡自動車道/国道468号経由で177.4㎞。これを1里3.9㎞で割ると45.5ですが、当時の道路事情等を考えると60里はおおむね妥当なところだと思われます。

　六十里と書いて「ついひじ」と読む苗字がある。
　多分、この苗字の始まりは対比地、つまり、築地でしょう。古語だと「築泥(つきひじ)」ですが、それが「ついひじ」と訛ったもので、泥をこねて作った土塀のことです。それを「ついふじ」ということで、富士に対すること60里と洒落たのでしょう。
　こういう洒落で漢字をあてた例は小鳥遊等が有名ですが、これは梨という苗字の人が分家か移転する際に母屋と違う字を当てたためといわれ、この六十里という苗字も同様のケースかと思われます。

1888年現在の新潟県柏崎市で日本石油が創業された際、式典の会場にコウモリが迷い込んできたそうです。
ここからコウモリの形に似せて日本の二文字を書いたのがマークの由来だそうですが、これはコウモリが中国では縁起がよいとされたからです。
「蝙蝠biānfú」という発音が「偏福piānfú」という音に近く、「幸運が一方的に訪れる」という意味になるからだそうです。
なお、日本語のコウモリは川守（かわもり）の訛りだと言われています。

このHiroの漢字は尋であるが、尋ねるという意味もある。
この尋の古代文字を見ると左と右という簡単な漢字を組み合わせたものである。

左という漢字は鈴を、右は壷を持っている。
壷は祝詞が入っており、この二つを振るシャーマンを表している。
鈴と壷を振ることにより神に尋ねているのである。

この左右という漢字の要素を取り出したのが、尋という単位である。
