While the original photograph often ballerinas Hoch appropriated for this photomontage highlighted the dancers' vitality and strength, here, the disembodied legs seem curiously lifeless as they dangle limply from a "cloud" in the blue sky. Perhaps it is the threatening "bird" hovering above that renders them inert. Its head derives from a photograph in Der Querschnitt of three carved-ivory sculpture heads from the former Congo that Hoch evidently had saved for nearly fifteen years; she used the left head here, and the middle and right heads in two works from the Ethnographic Museum series (see Sadness [pi. 44]). If the date inscribed at the lower right of this photomontage is correct, the work may be an oblique commentary on those Germans whose heads were "in the clouds" during the Nazi era. It is perhaps no coincidence that the opening sequence of Leni Riefenstahl's 1935 Triumph of the Will shows Hitler descending through the clouds in an airplane. — MM
