The @oregonian.com launches a relief effort to help freezing unemployed families in Portland and Multnomah County who stocked wood last summer but now lack the means to move fuel to their homes.
January 19, 1933
About 2,000 men tried to shove their way into the unemployment office in Portland, which has a capacity of 100. It took a dozen police officers to restore order. The men were waiting for snow shoveling jobs.

Commercial fishing groups are pushing a bill to bring fish wheels back to the Columbia. Theyβve been banned since 1927 after a sportsβfishing initiative. Catches remain steady, but profits and tax collections have fallen with the shift to pricier gillnets.

A threatening letter, crudely penciled, demanding $30,000 ransom "or your husband will be found in the river," was received by Mrs. Lee Schlesinger. Schlesinger disappeared on December 28. Police believe the letter is a hoax.

The orthodox Chinaman, Walter Tinket (Tickle) Achiu, defeats Hal Cox in the main event of the grappling exhibition at the Labor temple. Tinket took the odd fall with a Boston crab as the method of untold pain.

Wall Street insiders are looking for the next Republican leader after the death of former President Coolidge. A favorite is Oregon's Sen. Charles McNary, the incoming Senate minority leader. McNary is seen as a break from the past, being a West Coast progressive.

Portland city employees have asked the city council to transfer $40,000 from their salary deduction fund into the general and water funds to help balance the city budget.

To set the state budget, legislators propose reducing spending by $3.5 million, including cuts to state employee salaries by up to 40% and cutting $1 million from colleges. On the other side of the ledger, it is drawing up plans for a state property tax repeal.
